—Vice-Regal.— Their Excellencies, the GovernorGeneral and Lady Galway, after visiting the south, left Dunedin by plane yesterday afternoon for the north, —Ministerial.— The Minister in Charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Dr. D. G. M'Millan) arrived by plane yesterday, and to-day inspected shale oil deposits adjacent to Dunedin. He leaves for Centra] Otago to-morrow morning. The Minister of Defence (Hon. F. Jones), accompanied by his private secretary (Mr F. M. Sherwood), arrived by air from Wellington yesterday. On arrival he inspected the Taieri Air Force Station, and last night was present at the concert given by the R.N.Z.A.F. Band in the Town Hall. This morning he inspected the camp of the 3rd Field Regiment, N.Z.A., at Wingatui, and the Ist Battalion, Southland Regiment, at'Hancock Park. During the afternoon he visited the Montecillo Home and attended the St. John Ambulance parade in the. Queen’s Gardens. The Minister returns' to Wellington to-morrow night.

His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy will return from Invercargill to-morrow. Mr T. C. Ross returned yesterday from a trip to Singapore. Major-general Sir Andrew Russell, Inspector-General of Military Forces in New Zealand, will arrive from the north to-morrow, and will stay at the Fernhill Club. On Monday morning, at the invitation of the R.S.A., he will attend an Armistice Day ceremony in the Queen’s Gardens, and later will visit the military camps at Wingatui and Forbury. In the evening he is to inspect the Otago Mounted Rifles. The following day he will leave for Invercargill, there to inspect various units, returning to Dunedin on Wednesday to inspect a parade of the battalion of the National Military Reserve. The inspec-tor-general will leave for Camara on Thursday to inspect the 19th Company of the reserve there.

A British Official Wireless message .from Rugby says Lord Lothian, British Ambassador to the United States, who is at present on a short holiday in London, was to-day invested by the King as a Knight of the Thistle. Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., has announced that he will again contest the election for the Wanganui mayoralty, which he has held for four terms (says a Press Association telegram). Colonel Charles Guy Powles, C.M.G., D. 5.0., who has been appointed commandant at the Waiouru Territorial camp, is an officer with a distinguished record in two wars. Colonel Powles, who was born at Wellington on December 15, 1872, enlisted with the 4th New Zealand Contingent vyhen the Boer War broke out, later receiving a commission in the field. On his return to New Zealand he joined the New Zealand Staff Corps at its inception, and was captain and adjutant with the Wellington Mounted Rifles until 1914. On the outbreak of the Great W r ar he left with the Main Body as brigade major of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade with the rank of captain. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, France, and in the Sinai-Palestine campaign, reaching the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel. He became chief of the general staff, with the rank of colonel, in 1923, and the following year was appointed officer commanding the Central Command, with headquarters at Palmerston North. In 1930 ho became principal of Flock House, Bulls. Colonel Powles was mentioned four times in despatches during the last war, and the C.M.G. was conferred on him in 1918. He was also A.D.C. to the King for some time. Registrations at the Grand Hotel include Mr F. M. Sherwood, Mr V. F. Reece, Mr H. Sands, Mr J. S. Love (Wellington), Mr A. V. A. Green, Mrs H. Tod, Miss E. Tod (Christchurch), Mr Fred. R. Price (Timaru), Mr Alan Broad (Invercargill) are staying at the City Hotel.
