ARTHUR STREET SCHOOL
HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS Early historical associations with life Arthur Street School were recalled yesterday afternoon when two presentations were made at the school. Ono was the first dux medal awarded to a pupil of the school, this bearing the name of R. Farrant and being dated 1872. The other was a photograph of tho late Mr Alexander Hurt, an early pupil, who was subsequently associated with the School Committee for 13 years. Tho modal was presented by Mr W. R. Brugb on behalf of Mrs A- H. Fisher, of •St. Clair, a daughter of the late Mr Farrant, and Mr' Alexander Burt handed over the photograph of his father. Arthur Street School was the direct descendant of that institution founded by the immigrants who arrived by the Philip Laing, said Mr Brugh, making the presentation. The school took its present position in 1877, while Iho medal had been awarded five years before at. the Seconder Middle—School in York Place. Born in Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 1840, hi-- father died at Dunedin on January 2, 1920, Mr Burt said. He had been a man of vision in educational affairs. The late Mr Burt had been one of the captains of industry in Dunedin, Mr Brugh said. His name had been given to tho new wing at tho Technical College, and he had been well known and respected at tho Arthur Street School. Both presentations were accepted on behalf of tho school by the headmaster (Mr C. D. Gilling), who praised their historical values. Visitors who attended were entertained after the function by the screening of educational films.
