LITTLE AMERICA
TERRITORY CLAIMED BY CHILE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SANTIAGO, November 6. Chile has claimed all Antartica between meridians 53 and 90, west of Greenwich. This includes the territory recently visited by Admiral Byrd, also Little America. OFFICIAL MEMORANDUM HISTORIC DOCUMENT PRODUCED SANTIAGO, November 7. (Received November 8, at 8 a.m.) An official memorandum states: “ O’Higgins’s letter to Captain Coghlan, of the British Navy, was found in the archives of the Foreign Office, where the Liberator stated that Chile extends from Mejillones Bay to the Southern Shetlands.” The memorandum recalls that the United States made no claims of sovereignty and twice informed Chile that its activities in Antarctica were only scientific. [Bernardo O’Higgins (1778-1842) was the son of Ambrosio O’Higgins, an Irishman of humble origin who became Captain-Governor of Chile in 1788. Bernardo O'Higgins followed in his father’s footsteps, and in 1817 became dictator of Chile, in which capacity he formally declared its independence of Spain. He then drove out the Spanish troops and set about organising the Government of the country. He resigned in 1523 and lived in retirement until his death in 1842.]
