WATER GUSHED FORTH

A MIRACLE EXPLAINED Ecstatic Jewish worshippers, congregating in front of the Wailing Wall the other afternoon, offered a joyful prayer when they believed that a miracle had occurred (writes a Jerusalem correspondent of the New York ‘ Times ’). Through the crevices of huge stones dating from King Herod’s time spouted a fountain of water pouring a steady stream to the pavement. The gushing of water, which continued for more than an hour, was presumed to be holy water, a good omen. The news spread like wildfire as men and women cupped their hands and quaffed deeply, but the arrival of prosaic engineers broke the spell of enchantment. They traced the water flowing from the fissured walls to a deep cistern behind the W.ailing Wall inside a mosque in the Omar area.
