JOTTINGS Answer to Correspondent. “ Trainer.” —The stake for the Riccarton Handicap, to be run on Saturday, is £350, but the place moneys are £7O and £35, leaving the winner’s share £245, and apprentices can claim any allowances they are entitled to in this race. Support for Plutus. v During the past few days there has been a fair amount of support forthcoming for Plutus in the Trotting Cup. A Correction. Ferry Post’s name should not have been included in the list of acceptances for the New Zealand Trotting Cup as published yesterday. Southlanders for Riccarton. Milford, Colonel Rouge, and Wild Career were taken north from Invercargill yesterday. Milford and Wild Career are both engaged on Saturday, and Colonel Rouge on the subsequent days of the Cup meeting.

Might be a Valuable Prize. A half-brother to The Raker is to be the first prize in an art union to raise funds for soldiers’ comforts. The youngster, which is by Siegfried from Kippet Lee, is being donated by his breeder, Mr W. J. Smith, of Waipawa. Beau Leon. It was reported at Trentham that Beau Leon gave his trainer an anxious time during the Wellington meeting, but has since made a good recovery. He has been paid up for in the Kiccarton Handicap, to bo run over nine furlongs on Saturday, in which three other Derby colts—Globe Trotter, Lambourn, and Sir Cameron—are also engaged. Returned to Work. Foxlove and Spendthrift have been' brought in to be prepared for summer racing. Foxlove is now back in F. W. Ellis’s stable after an absence of more than 12 months, and Spendthrift, one of W. E. Hazlett’s string, made her reappearance on the Invercargill racecourse on Monday morning. Services In Demand. The two Invercargill apprentices W. F. Ellis and J. L. Strathern will bo doing a lot of riding at the New Zealand Cup meeting. The former will be on The Raker (New Zealand Cup), Don’t Forget (Stewards’ Handicap), Desert Maid, and Royal Lancer on Saturday, and Strathern will ride Wild Career, Colonel Rouge, Rebel Mate, and Tissue in their engagements. Strathern can still claim a 31b allowance in races in which the winner’s share of the stake does not exceed £250. Only Three Deletions. Of the original 19 horses handicapped in the New Zealand Trotting Cup only Donald Dhu, Ferry Post, and Lightning Lady failed to make the final payment. If the original intention of limiting the field to 14 is adhered to the Selection Committee will have to take out two of the limit horses. It is interesting.to note in relation to this proviso that Horse Power has also been accepted for in the Canterbury Handicap to be run just after the Cup race.

Riders in Cup and Stewards' Handicap. Some riding engagements made for the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap are as follows: —C. T. Wilson, Dictate and Spanish Lad; P. Spratt, Capricious and Density; L. J. Ellis, Royal Chief; B. H. Morris, The Buzzer and Sir Beau; H. Wiggins, Te Kawiti and Not Out; W. E. Ellis, The Raker and Don’t Forget; A. Messervy, Wardress and Doria. Others for the Cup alone include M. Caddy, Passafonn; W. Mudford, Taurangi; M. Billington, Second Innings; and L. W. Hare, Settlement. Appeal Upheld. General satisfaction will bo expressed at the decision of the Canterbury District Committee in upholding the appeal of L. W. Hare against the month’s suspension imposed on him by the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s Judicial Committee. This lad is a particularly clean rider, and good judges of last Saturday’s race saw little wrong with his riding at the particular stage where it was alleged he caused interference. Hare will now bo on Settlement in the New Zealand Cup, Gold Flight in the Stewards’ Handicap, and Hanlon in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday. .

Old Rowley. When Old Rowloy won the Melbourne Cup yesterday afternoon he effected the biggest surprise in this race since the Aucklandowned Wotan scored in 1936, and his success would be a great relief to the ring in both Sydney and Melbourne, as it is estimated that a win by Beau Vite would have cost it at least £200,000. Showers yesterday morning, according to the announcer, did not affect the going, but Old Rowley’s time, 3min 26sec, was well outside the record, 3min 21,Jsec established by Wotan. Last year Rivette took 3min 27sec, and the previous year Catalogue won in 3rain 26Isec. Old Rowley, a six-year-old gelding, is by The Buzzard (sire of The Buzzer, one of the fancied candidates for this week’s New Zealand Cup) from Syceonette, by Syce (imported) from Ardoneile, by Ardon from Beryl by the Australian Pear, and comes from the same family as Maple and Fiavinius, both winners of the Caulfield Cup. Old Rowley was bred at the Lyndburst Stud in Queensland, and is a half-brother to another good performer in High Bra».

Can She Stay? Though The Ring won the Watkins Handicap, £6OO, run over a mile and three furlongs on the second day of the recent meeting at Trentham, she escaped being penalised. Her time, 2min 20,Jscc. was IJsec faster than Royal Chief’s in the Wellington Handicap on the first day, but the track was much faster on the second day. In the Watkins Handicap The Ring was in receipt of 181 b from Sly Fox, and the latter is reported to have been unlucky in being checked in the run homo. In the New Zealand Cup Sly Fox will concede The Ring only 131 b, and as the better proved stayer of the pair he should turn the tables on the Siegfried—Gay Salute mare. She lias raced very consistently this season, having won twice and second once out of six starts. Her other win was scored at Masterton last month in the Vailanco Memorial, in whicli she carried 7.7 and won by half a head in 2min 12 l-ssec on a good track. Now a five-year-old, this mare should be at her best. Like the majority of the field in next Saturday’s race, she must be taken on trust over two miles, but she was moving on strongly at the end of a mile and three furlongs in the Watkins Handicap. Last year Yours Truly won the Vallance Me

morial Handicap, then ran second in the Watkins Handicap at Trentham, before going on to win the New Zealand Cup. The Ring, having won the latter race, has better but very similar credentials for next Saturday’s race, and it will be interesting to nolo_ whether she can continue her unusual similarity of records. The Ring’s dam, Gay Salute, is by Lord Qucx from Soot, by All Black from Salute, by Soult from Lady Musket, and traces back to the Vatterina family, so this five-year-old marc is bred on good staying lines. Another Donation, At yesterday’s mooting of the coniniill.ee of the Canterbury Jockey Club it- was decided to make a further donation of £SOO towards the cost of alterations to the Union Jack Chib for the use of soldiers. Trained Winners of Four Melbourne Cups. K. do Mostre owned and trained' four winners of early Melbourne Cups, and he prepared a lii’th, for the Hon. J. While. ■I Tail also owned and trained four Cup winners, and these two men between them sadd.ed the winners of nine of the first 18 Melbourne Cups. Since then K. Bradfield, W. S. Hickenhotham, and J. Scobie have each turned ’but four winners Belle Cane’s Programme According to a report from Wanganui, Belle Cane is definitely to run in the spring Plate on the opening day at Riccarton. leaving the Stewards’ to her slablemate, Sir Beau. It is also unlikely that she will oppose Sir Beau in the Derby. At the Cup Meeting in 1932 Silver Scorn won the Spring Plate, Derby, Oaks, and Canterbury Cup, a performance that has never been equalled at Riccarton before or since. A Good Win. , Luck never is absent from racing. Mr E. C. Harnett lost straight out and doubles over £3OO when Bcaulirro failed in the Epsom and Metropolitan. A. E. Ellis, who roda him in the latter race, advised, and the trainer, G. Price, agreed, that tho horse required a holiday. As Beaulivre seemed healthy his owner told G. Price to take him to Melbourne in caso he recovered form. There was no idea of starting him in the Caulfield Cup until he ran a tine seven furlongs with High Caste. Two days later he beat Reading in a tryout over nine furlongs, and it was decided to let him run in the Cup—for tho stake alone. Going to the course, with no intention of backing the horse, Mr Harnett was challenged by a bookmaker to take £5,500 to £SOO, and , accepted it. With the stake the race netted him £IO,OOO.

Carbine Still Holds Record, Carbine 10.5 has for 50 years held the distinction of carrying the highest weight to victory in the Melbourne Cup. At the other end of the scale is Nimbiefoot 5.3, which included a penalty of 31b. Prior to that Banker was a winner with 5.4. Nimblefoot’s win was gained 70 years ago, and his rider carried a black armband owing to his owner having died a day or two before the race. (There is a story that the owner dreamt that ha saw Nimbiefoot win with the mourning badge, and backed him for £2,000. His death relieved the bookmaker of a liability, but he paid the money over to the widow.) The highest weight ever carried in the race was 10.10 by Phar Lap (eighth); the top in a handicap was 11.5 given to Carbine. Fast Work at Riccarton. According to the ‘ Star-Sun,’ the training tracks at Riccarton yesterday morning must have been very fast, and some unusually good half-miles were recorded. Willow Wood 49sec, Salutation and Palfrey 48 3-ssec, Belie Cane 48 2-sseo (with Rakaiianga only a neck away), Retrogression 49 3-ssec, Synthetic 49 2-ssec, and Gold Nugget 50sec, Three Stewards’ Handicap candidates also recorded fast times over five furlongs. Don’t Forget 61 1-Ssec (lust four in 49sec), and Sir Beau and Density each took 61 2-ssec (last four in 49 l-ssec). Sir Beau appeared to be going comfortably at the finish of Ills sprint. Royal Chief ran a mile on the plough, going easily over the first five furlongs and sprinting homo over the last three in 37. 2-ssec. Two other Cup horses, The Buzzer and The Ring, were sent a mile and a-quarter on the course. The former showed up much the better, running the full distance in 2niin ISsee, last mile in Irain 45 3-sseo, and last four furlongs in 53 3-ssec. The best six furlongs of the morning was credited to Spanish Lad in Imin 15sec. Ho was brought home over the last four by Desert Maid in 49sec. Gold Flight, Imin 15 2-ssec, Gay Parade, 15 3-ssec, were other smart performances over this distance. Doria was seen to advantage over seven furlongs in Imin 28 4-ssec, but Muffler knocked the fractions off that time. Capricious, looking better for her race at Motukarara, was sent nine furlongs, the last six in Imin 18 3-Ssee and three in 37 4-ssec. /
