TRANSPORT AUTHORITY

LICENSES REVIEWED AND AMENDED The No. 4 Licensing Authority (Mr A. G. Raines) sat this morning to receive evidence and representations concerning various goods licenses. The application of T. Woodford for a goods license for the Green Island district was granted. An application for a license to carry goods, mainly cardboard boxes, cartons, and suchlike goods, by truck to Christchurch, was made by Mackintosh, Caley, Phoenix Ltd., Dunedin. The appellants submitted figures showing a tremendous difference in cost between the carriage of such good by truck ns suggested and carriage by rail. Objection to the granting of the license was taken by the Railway Department, and after hearing evidence the authority reserved its decision but granted a tr-mnorsivv license as asked for in the meantime. o, urogan (Fairfield) applied for an amendment of his goods license to enable him to carry his own gear, spare parts, and petrol, necessary to carrying out his work as contractor to the Public Works Department.— Granted. The Bryant Transport Co. Ltd sought an amendment of their goods license to cover extension of its area in certain country districts.—Granted. Transfers of the license held by D. C. M. M'lnnes to L. Ritchie, of Dunedin. and that held by M. Collins to T. J. Heafey, of Dunedin, were approved. G. Andrew, whose application for a goods license was under review, said that he objected to becoming a member of the Transport Operators Association on the grounds that the obligation to do so had not become law as “ it had not been passed by the House of Representatives.” Mr Raines said that it

was not his province to argue the matter of the Order in Council. The regulations provided for membership of an appropriate organisation. The authority expressed the opinion that the present applicant was very foolish to assume the attitude he had. The license would be granted on the condition that the applicant joined the appropriate organisation by November 20; if be failed to do so the revoking of his license would be considered.
