JOTTINGS Improving. Night Dress was finishing on strongly in the Buchanan Memorial, and appears to be returning to form. He should race well on his present handicap at the Now Zealand Cup Meeting. Pav-out Clerk’s Loss. There was only £ls 10s. invested on Calypso for a place in the Okain’s Trial Stakes at the Banks Peninsula meeting, and one hacker who invested £2 10s on him in ten-shilling tickets was paid out on the £1 dividend. This was. very costly for the pay-out clerk. Bast Race For Months. Lord Midas ran his best race for some months when he finished second to Symbol on Saturday, and fought out every inch in a tight finish over the last furlong and 11half. He is engaged in the Linwood Handicap next Saturday with 7.8. Pulled Up Sore. Passaform found the going too firm for his liking at Motukarara, and after running an indifferent race was very sore on returning to the enclosure. It will not be surprising to find that he has not been paid up for when the final payment is made this afternoon. Too Far For Hearth. With L. J. Ellis up there was very solid support for Hearth in the open sevenfurlong race at Motukarara, bub again the distance appeared to be beyond her measure. She was ridden in behind the field until the home turn was made, and, though she finished on strongly, was fully four lengths behind the winner at the post. Best Race This Season. Capricious was well up in the early stages of the Buchanan Memorial Handicap, but lost her position racing along the back. She improved her position again approachino* the home turn, and was finishing on strongly at the finish. It was easily her best performance this season, I sll * this Ni*ht Raid mare does not look as well forward as she did on the eve of the Cup meeting last year. Lost Chance at Start. Lci"hnor, with the advantage of a 51b allowance, was considered unbeatable in the concluding event at Motukarara, «ud though ho only finished fourth was unlucky to be beaten. Starting from No. 10 berth at the barrier, ho was the last to and tailed the field until more than halfway across the top. Even there he did not get a good run. He should do bettor /next week. Swordstick Set a Hard Task.

Considering the strong wind blowing at Motukarara the Buchanan Memorial Handicap was run at a very solid pace, The first half-mils took 52scc, the next furlong 13 3-Sscc, and .the last five furlongs 62 l-sscc. Swordstick, who also finished third in this raco last year, Svas ect a severe task in acting as pacemaker under 8.7 for over a mile and just lasted long enough to hold oft Night Dress to beat him a head for third money. Bad Luck for Stable. It is extremely bad luck for D. J. M'Donald that his apprentice, L. W. Hare, will not bo able to ride his team at luccarton this month. It is difficult to obtain the services of a good light-weight almost on the evo of a New Zealand Cup meeting. Haro was to have riddon Settlement in the New Zealand Cup, but another horseman will now have to be found. An Easy Win. The easiest win of tho afternoon’s racing at Motukarara was scored by King s i oast, who is a four-year-old full brother to Gallant Fox Ho was allowed to run along at the tail of the field until approaching tho homo turn and then cut down tho field to win bv three lengths. On the opening day at Riccarton King’s Toast is engaged in the Liuwood Handicap, seven furlongs, and as a 71b allowance is likely to be claimed again for him he will bo in demand. To-morrow’s Melbourne Cup. The following are the final acceptances for tho MELBOURNE CUP, £7,500, and a gold cup value £2OO. Two miles.

Not a Reliable Guide. Though the Buchanan Memorial Handicap always attracts a number of New Zealand Cup candidates it has failed to bo a reliable guide to the winner of the latter race. Last year Capricious and Swordstick finished second and third respectively at Motukarara, and the former ran second in the Cup. In 1938 Dictate won the Buchanan Memorial, but did not start in the Cup. In 1937 Argentic won at Motukarara, with Cerue Abbas unplaced, but in the New Zealand Cup Cerne Abbas won, with Argentine unplaced. In 1936 Polydora was unplaced at Motukarara, and finished third in the Cup, and the year previous to that Argentic finished third in the Buchanan Memorial and third in the Cup. This year there were seven Cup candidates, and they finished: Second Innings first. Dictate second, Swordstick third, Capricious sixth, Wardress seventh. To Kawiti eighth, and Passaform nearly last. His First Race. Willow Wood, nmner-up to Dispense in the Okains Trial Stakes at Motukarara, was having his first race, and looks like making good. He is a nice looking chestnut colt by Cricket Bat from Winsome Hind, and is engaged in the Welcome Stakes on Saturday. Ho was a little slow to find his feet at the start, and about sixth into the straight, but finished on very strongly. Queensland Derby Winner. Fearless Fox, winner of the Queensland Derby, £1,500, one mile and a-half, on Saturday, was bred at Mr W, Alexander’s Te Awamutu Stud, and was sold at the 1959 National Yearling sales for 600 gs. He is by Foxbridge from Eager Rose, by Day Comet from the Wairiki mare Wee Rose, and belongs to. tho same family that produced Corinax, winner of the Auckland Cup; King Ingoda, winner of the Melbourne Cup, and Medallion, winner of the New Zeaalnd Derby. Eager Rose was a big stake winner in the Dominion. Scored Their First Wins. Mr J. R. M’Kenzie’s colours were seen to tho fore at Motukarara, as he won with Spangled Maiden and King’s Toast. Tho former was driven by J. B. Bryce, a nephew of tho well-known trainer-driver, J. Bryce, and tha rider of King’s Toast was J. D. Corboy, an apprentice in C. Emerson’s stables. Both of these lads showed good judgment in the handling of their horses, and each recorded their first winning performance. A Good Performance. Second innings carried l[lb more than his New Zealand Cup impost when he won tho Buchanan Memorial on Saturday, and his performance was easily the best qf the seven Cup candidaiteadn the race. He lost a little ground at the start, and with Pink Lad was tailing the field as they turned out of the straight, but along the back stretch lie raced up on the outside of the big field, and at the far turn was lying second to Swordstick. Dictate just headed this pair racing across the top, and Second Innings was third into the straight. Both he and Dictate had Swordstick’s measure before reaching the distance post; then they commenced a see-saw finish, first one and then the. other having his nose in front, but Second Innings held on the belter, and scored by a very narrow margin. Whether he can see out another six furlongs remains to be seen, but Saturday’s performance was a really good one. In last year’s Cup Second Innings led for over a mile and five furlongs, then he dropped right out, and was in the last half-dozen to finish.

Te Kawiti Rot Impressive. The appearance of Te Kawiti, one of the fancied candidates from tho North Island for the New Zealand Cup, in the Buchanan Memorial Handicap on Saturday added much interest to the race. He is a finelooking brown gelding and built on the lines of a good stayer. His connections made no secret of the fact that they thought he would win, and with his Cup pilot (W. N. Wiggins up) Te Kawiti was sent out a good favourite. He was always racing about the middle of the big field, and about sixth, just behind Wardress, as they turned into the two furlongs long straight for the run home. There both he and Wardress met with some interference, but both of them got clear quickly, and had either been good enough could have won. But instead of making up any ground they may have lost through interference they drifted further hack, and the Aucklander finished eighth, just behind Wardress. Tho interference this pair met may have been more serious than it appeared to he from the stands, but it is worth mentioning that neither Wiggins nor Messervy (rider of Wardress) lodged any complaint on returning to the scales. Te Kawiti’s performance was not impressive, and on Saturday’s form his chance in next Saturday's big race does not appear to he good. Wardress. After the good form she showed in the R'angiora Cup on the, previous Monday, Wardress was expected to run well in the principal race at Motukarara, and none of the 14 candidates looked in better condition in tho birdcage. The interference she met with at the home turn may have affected her, but to have a winning chance should have been further up. and she made no impression on the leaders in the long run home. Another Beau Pere Wins. Though Taurangi won tho principal race at tho Rangitikoi meeting on Saturday, the opposition she met was not strong. She carried 9.8 and won in 2rnin Bsec, with another New Zealand Cup candidate in Little Robin, tc whom she conceded 201 b, third. Taurangi has to give Little Robin 211 b in the Cup, in which she has 8.8. This mare, by Beau Pore from Barbacan, is stoutly fancied by her connections for next Saturday’s big handicap, and this race was a good trial.
