—Yice-regal.— His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Galway) accompanied by Lady Galway and Lord Dormer, his aide-de-camp, arrived by car late yesterday afternoon on his farewell visit to the city. Last night their Excellencies attended the service at St. Paul’s Cathedral. This morning his Excellency inspected the 3rd Field Regiment, Now Zealand Artillery, at Wingatui at 9«45, and at 11 o’clock he inspected the Ist Battalion Southland Regiment, at Chisholm Park. Lady Galway was entertained at lunch by the Otago Women’s Club, and this afternoon their Excellencies visited the Maori section of the Otago Museum. To-night they will be free. To-morrow evening they will be accorded a farewell by citizens in the Concert Chamber. Their Excellencies are staying at Wain’s Hotel. —: i Mr C. E. Brian, who has been de-puty-chief postmaster at Dunedin for two and a-half years, left this morning for Wellington, where he has been appointed deputy-chief postmaster. Mr W. W. Batchelor, secretary of the Shop Assistants’ Union, left this morning for Wellington to attend a conference.
Mr F. S. Thomas, advance agent for the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, at present on tour, arrived on Saturday night to make arrangements for the band’s visit here this week. He leaves for Invercargill to-morrow. Members of the Post Office staff, met on Saturday to bid farewell to Mr C. W. Harding, who has retired from his position of clerk in the mail room. His retirement brought to a close a career which must he very nearly a record in the service, 40 years in the one town. He was presented with a leather travelling suitcase and a rug, the presentation being made by Mr N. R. M'lsaac (chief postmaster)’ who was supported iby Mr W. Willett (superintendent of the mail foom), and by Mr A. G. Osborne (chairman of the Staff Committee). Mr H. M. Christie has resigned his position as a member of the Local Government Loans Board.
Mr J. AV. M'Glinchy has been appointed Government representative on the New Zealand Poultry Board. The Administrative heads of New Zealand’s two principal dependencies— Mr H. F. Ayson, resident commissioner and chief judge of the Cook Islands, and Mr A. C. Turnbull, acting-adminis-trator of Western Samoa—have arrived in the Dominion on furlough, accompanied by their wives.
