ST. JOHN BABY CONTEST

FINAL CEREMONY CONCLUDED Baby Gwynne, the eightecn-month-old son of Sergeant-major W. J. Gwynne, who is at present stationed at Burnham military camp, and of j\lrs Gwynne, was presented last night with a cheque for £250, the Dominion second prize in the St. John Centennial baby contest. The first prize went to Baby Christian Harrison, of Auckland. This, tlie final ceromoify in connection with the contest, took place in the St. James Theatre, where the voting was held, and whore the bulk of the work of organising was carried out. Colonel G. Barclay, New Zealand Chief Commissioner of the Order of St. John, attended the evening screening at the St. James to make the presenta-

tion, and was introduced by Mr A. Gordon, manager, who expressed his appreciation of the co-operation he had received in his part of the work. Colonel Barclay said the contest had been organised as part of a scheme to raise a substantial sum for the work of St. John in New Zealand, hut the war had intervened, and had brought with it numerous appeals for more j

urgent purposes. The contest had now been concluded, and, though the first 'prize had not come to Dunedin, all could see that the runner-up, Baby Gwynne, was a particularly fine boy, and the city had much to be proud of. He then handed the cheque to Baby Gwynne. Sergeant-major Gwynne briefly rej turned thanks.
