NAVY QUEEN ACTIVITIES

SUCCESSFUL BUFFET DINNER AND CALL

One of the most successful functions arranged to augment the funds of the Navy Queen was the buffet dinner and dance held on Thursday evening. The Early Settlors’ Hall presented a delightful scene with its shimmering, multicoloured streamers and well-laden tables, with effective low bowls of flowers, when the crowd of diners arrived. The Navy Ball Sub-committee, which was responsible for the evening, was headed by Mrs R. S. Black, who received the guests wearing an elegant model frock of white georgette, featuring a shoulder cape of the same material edged with heavy white beading. Among those noticed at the dinner were Lady Sidey (ruby velvet), Mr and Mrs F. S. A vent (floral frock), Mr and Mrs S. M'Pherson (Oriental satin frock, fur cape), Mr and Mrs J. Later in the evening these guests adjourned to the Pioneer Hall, where a truly nautical effect had been achieved by the use of mural paintings that completely covered all four walls. Along a deep blue sea sailed ships of the British Navy, while an occasional aeroplane hovered over the scene. Particularly effective was the realistic picture of the guns looming up behind the orchestra's platform, from which Dick Colvin and his band were ' playing. Flags draping the doorways and an immense canopy of fluttering blue streamersoverhead completed a most original and; appropriate decorative scheme. A constant reminder of the fact that the country is at war was given by the presence of so many khaki-clad dancers, mostly men from the Territorial camps at Wingatui and Forhury.

Arrival of Navy Queen. The arrival of the Navy Queen, Miss Jessie M'Lennan, who was accompanied by Second-lieutenant Alex. M'Dowell,

She was received by Mrs Black and Mr H. C. Harford, who led her to the stage, to be introduced to members of the Ball Committee and Navy League Committee.
