NOTES ON THE EVENTS
[By St. Olair.] Susie was made just over £3O better favourite than Craigiea for the Mandeville High-weight, but had no chance with the latter, who led all the way, yet was lucky to beat Araboa, who was kept too far back over the middle stages. Craigiea, Susie, and Triple Cone led out of the straight, and as they entered the -back Craigiea had drawn clear, and she led along the back from Kippen, Susie, and Triple Cone, Araboa racing near the tail of the field. Craigiea was first round the far turn from Kippen, Susie, Triple Cone, Southern Light, and Airdrie. As they raced across the top Araboa began to improve his position, and had to go out wide to follow Craigiea, Kippen, Triple Gone, Susie, and Airdrie into the straight. Craigiea held her advantage in the run home to win by nearly two lengths from Araboa, who finished fast to beat Airdrie a head. Susie, Southern Light, and Royal Money were next.
Royal Lancer was £lB3 better fancied than Southern Sail for the Gordon Hack Handicap, but was unlucky at the start and looked to be a good thing beaten. Though the field was in good line when the barrier was released Dolita, was badly left, and Royal Lancer slow to find his feet. Lady Sincere and Southern Sail led along the back from Withdrawal, Colonel Rouge, and Green Gables. As they raced round the far turn Lady Sincere and Southern Sail were still together in charge from Withdrawal, with Colonel Rouge next. Approaching the straight Lady Sincere had drawn clear and led Southern Sail, Colonel Rouge, Royal Lancer, and Green Gables into the straight. Colonel Rouge then took charge and Green Gables fell and appeared to interfere with the favourite. Colonel Rouge held on to win by a good length from Royal Lancer, who beat Lady Sincere half a length. Leather Boa was close up fourth, then a gap to Withdrawal and Southern Sail. • • • • Sparkle was sent out £35 better fancied than Chirp for the Waikaka Handicap. The former gave a lot of trouble at the barrier and was placed on the outside of the field. I’id el is was slowest to jump out, and Silver Streak led through the straight from Peony Rose and Night Pal. As the field entered the back stretch Silver Streak was racing two lengths clear from Peony Rose, with Night Pal, Sparkle, and Silver Lady following in that order. Silver Streak maintained his lead along the back and round
the far turn, and was first into the straight from Night Pal, Sailing Lady, Sparkle, and Mona’s Song. Sailing Lady made a good effort to catch Silver Streak in the run home, but the latter hung on too well, and beat her two lengths. Mona’s Song was a similar distance away third, just beating Night Pal. Doubleack, Chirp, and Heidelburg were next. '• * * • Gold Flight was backed down to a short price in the Flying Handicap, being £l3l better backed than Strip, who won Very easily. Norseman and the favourite were slow to find their feet, and Flagman and Strip the smartest out. At the end of a furlong Strip was joined by Gold Flight, and the pair, racing together, led round the far turn from Rodeur and Lady Blissful. Strip and Gold Flight were still together turning for home from Lady Blissful, Rodeur, and Flagman, then Strip drew out to win very easily by four lengths from Wild Career, who finished very fast and beat Flagman a head, then more heads to Rodeur, Blissful Lady, and Phalanx. Gold Flight finished last. * * * * Lisette was made £72 better favourite for the Balfour Trot, but met with interference about five furlongs from home and burst a tyre. Jorrocks failed to go away, and Vorena led through the first half-mile from Lisette and Sea Peter. These three were still in charge turning into the back, but passing the. five-furlong post Star Voyage ran up fast into second place, and Lisette dropped back, Parole and Deeside falling. Vorena led Star Voyage, Embargo, Frau Sol, and Indian Wrack across the top, then Sea Born began to move up, and into the straight Vorena was just in front of Indian Wrack, with Fran Sol and Sea Born next. Vorena drew out from the distance and won by two and a-half lengths from Indian Wrack, who beat Sea Born three lengths. Embargo and Fran Sol were next. Erin’s View was £B9 better favourite than Filibeg for the Novice Handicap, and they finished first and second. From a very ragged start My Mistake, Feather Lassie, and Knight of Old wore badly left. Filibeg and Millibar were the first to show out, and at the end of two furlongs had drawn three lengths clear from Milton Abbas. At the far turn Filibeg and Millibar were still together about two lengths in front of Erin View, Shantyman, and Berrima. Filibeg was first into the straight from Erin View, Millibar, and Berrima. At the distance Erin View challenged and beat Filibeg home two lengths. Jalna was a length and a half away third, just beating Berrima, and then followed Millibar and Gold Sequin. • * « * Passing By was made a short-priced favourite for the Otama Harness Handicap, being £255 10s bettor backed than Turco. Real Gold led Aidns over the first two furlongs, and at the end of half a mile Real Gold was just showing clear from Rey Chimes, Aldus, April Direct, Passing By, and Happy King. Real Gold led along the back from Rey Chimes, Aldus, April Direct, and Passing By. The favourite appeared to lose some ground racing across the top, and Real Gold led into the straight from April Direct, Aidus, Rey Chimes, and Happy King. Having sufficient speed to take advantage of an opening that offered opposite the distance post, the favourite was able to get out of a hopeless position, and, finishing very generously, just got up to beat Real Gold half a length. April Direct' was a neck away third, half a length in front of Aidus. Rey Chimes and Happy King were next. « * * * There was only £9 between Sir Denis, Midgard, and Tissue in the good wagering on the Charlton Handicap. Eire’s Ruin led Green Boa, Sir Denis, and Midgard out of the straight, but going to the back Midgard ran up and joined Eire’s Ruin, the pair leading Green Boa and Sir Denis, also racing together. Racing round the far turn, Midgard and Eire’s Ruin led Green Boa across the top. Midgard was first into the straight from Green Boa, Sir Denis. Eire’s Ruin, and Sea Lady. At the distance Green Boa challenged Midgard and won by a length from Sea Lady, who finished fast and boat Midgard half a length. Sir Denis was a. poor fourth and Tissue lash.
