ALL FIRST-INNINGS WINS CHAMPION TEAM DEFEATED Fine, if dull, weather and good wickets favoured cricketers on Saturday, when tho first round of matches was completed. Bast year’s champion team, Grange, was soundly beaten by High School Old Boys, who took toll of the weak attack and compiled 309 for six wickets (declared) in response to Grange’s first innings total of 217. The winner’s runs were the result of consistent batting, Edwards getting 78, Otway 67 not out, Leader 58, and Graham 56. Knight revealed all-round ability by following up his century of the previous Saturday with a bowling average of five for 66. Grange, batting again, lost five f °Tho new “ combine,” Albion-Y.M.C.A., began tho season with a creditable victory over Kaikorai, more than doubling tho latter’s first innings score of 109, while the hill team in a second essay was all out for 136. Ditchfield, for the winner, carried his score to 70, and Anderson, among the later batsmen, added 24. Kaikorai was indebted to Balk (43) and M’Gregor (25 not out) for its escape from outright defeat. Lankford Smith again bowled well for Albion-Y.M.C.A., taking six for 64 in 15 overs. Carisbrook A succumbed to University, whose score of 215 gave it a lead of 38 runs. Dunn (59), Gowland (34), and Clark (30 not out) were chiefly responsible. The A’s did much better when they batted a second time, losing one wicket for 118. Gaylor (381 and Milnes (57) being the notout batsmen. I Dunedin’s later batsmen failed rather badly in attempting to overtake Carisbrook B’s 193, the Tonga Park team’s total reaching only 130. Nimmo’s pacoy deliveries accounted for five wickets at a cost of 39 runs. The B’s second attempt realised 168, two bright knocks by Cavanagh (58) and Coombs (35) being outstanding features.

DUNEDIN BATSMEN FAIL Weather and wicket conditions were good at Tonga Park when the match between Dunedin and Carisbrook B was resumed. The B’s had scored 193 and Dunedin 77 for three the previous Saturday, and the latter made rather a poor showing when play was resumed, being all out for 130. O’Sullivan added only 7 and Geddes nothing at all to their “ carried over ” scores, and Nimmo, bowling steadily, finished off the rest without much trouble. The tall, fast bowler finished with five wickets for 39 runs. The only one of Dunedin’s later batsmen to perform at all attractively was R. Torrance, who hit hard and cleanly to make 13. When the B’s took the wickets again there was some bright cricket. Cavanagh played a hard driving innings of 58, which took 72 minutes, and included four 4-’s, and Coombs hit up 35 by forceful play. Martin (17) and Stanley (11) were also in aggressive moodf but the rest did get far, the innings reaching 168. O’Sullivan, Robertson, and Geddes divided the wickets, Donnelly being absent on military duties. . , , , Dunedin went in again for 25 minutes batting, and M’Donald (19) and R. Wedlake (13) scored freely to take the score to 35 without loss before stumps. Carisbrook secured a win on the first innings by 63 runs. The fielding on both sides was keen, and Peppered (Dunedin) and Coombs (Carisbrook) each brought off _ a splendid catch, while M'Donald (Dunedin) ran two men out with smart returns. CHAMPIONS BEATEN FIVE POINTS FOR OLD BOYS High School Old Boys scored a five-point win over Grange (last year’s champions) at Logan Park, replying to Grange’s tally of 217 by putting together 309 for the loss of six wickets and then applying the closure In the 35 minutes or so that were left Grange made 97 runs for five wickets, Old Boys winning by 92 runs on the first innings. When play was resumed on Saturday. Old Boys (none for .27) lost two wickets in the first over which was bowled by Knight, Freeman taking a brilliant onehanded catch almost full-length on the ground to dispose of Hunt. Edwards and Leader were then associated in a fine stand which took the score to 153 before Leader was dismissed by Cbettleburgh after scoring 58, including a 6 and four 4’s. Against an innocuous attack in which Knight was the only ono to show much hostility, 'Edwards gave a bright and attractive display, running up a score of 78 in 91 minutes.' He hit 15 4’s, his runs being scored with clean, cricket-like strokes. Otway and Graham also took heavy toll of the bowling, the former contributing 67 not out. He batted 65 minutes and . scored 12 4’s, while further indication of tho rate of scoring may be gauged from the fact that G r;iham’s 56 were made in 47 minutes, with 11 4’s. With five for 66 off 14 overs, Knight was easily the most effective member of the Grange attack, but Elmes displayed little venom, and from 16 overs had 80 rtms scored off him without the recompense of a wicket. When Grange hatted again Galland and Payne were associated in a good opening partnership, the former giving an aggressive display for 34, while Payne made 23. Details: — GRANGE. First innings ...
