SURFING SEASON

STATE OF BEACHES NEED FOR CARE Many enthusiasts have already answered the call of the surf, but to the majority the Labour Day week-end usually denotes the beginning of the season, and given fine weather there should be crowds on all the local beaches over the week-end. Most of the beaches are in reasonably good order, but a general word of caution to bathers might be timely. The surf clubs are just getting under way, and, almost without exception they face the opening of a new season with largely depleted membership. It behoves the public, therefore, to give their whole-hearted co-operation to those whose task it will be to patrol the beaches by keeping within the prescribed areas for bathing and not venturing out too far. In recent weeks some of the sand at St. Clair has been swept away, but the beach is steadily improving and at the present time is in good order for bathing. At St. Kilda the best part for bathing is almost immediately to the left of the entrance to the beach. There are several small holes in front of the entrance.

Tomahawk beach will be flagged over the holidays by Mr J. Pereira, and bathers are urged to keep between the flags. There is a dangerous area outside the safety zone, this area being full of holes and rips. Moderate seas have been running. Brighton beach, always one of the most popular in Otago, has already attracted many surfers, and it is in excellent condition. being flat and smooth.
