catoe issued lur competency in swimming for the yeai 1939-40 was 20,375, a decrease of 12,679 on the record number gained in the previous season. The decrease is attributable solely to the very unfavourable weather experienced last February, particularly in the North Island, where, in very many schools, swimming was abandoned altogether. The Canterbury Centre was the only one to establish a new centre record. In all other cases, save one, a substantial decline was shown. The number of schools represented is 781, as against the record number of 1,127 last year. The number of certificates issued is shown below, the corresponding figures for the previous year being given in parentheses:— Auckland, 5,302 (9,078); Canterbury. 2,756 (2,638); Otago, 2,043 (2,479); Hawke’s Bay, T. 859 (2,772); South Auckland, 1,805 (2,138); Wellington. 1.583 (2,991); South Canterbury, 930 (1.124); Manawatu, 754 (1,582) ; ; Taranaki, 652 (2.552); Wanganui, 623 (2,383); Ashburton, 543 (826) ; Bay of Plenty, 476 (1,058); Southland, 458 (89); Nelson, 428 (952); West Coast, 171 (397). The number of schools represented were: —Auckland 156, Canterbury 103, Hawke’s Bay 101, Otago 81 South Auckland 70, Wellington 62, South Canterbury 34, Taranaki 33, Manawatu 29, Nelson 23. Southland 22, Wanganui 21. Ashburton 20, West Coast 14, Bay of Plenty 12. On the list or leading schools Musselburgh is named ninth for New Zealand with a total of 146 awards. No fewer than 25 schools qualified for the special certificate, and the following Otago schools were representedlnch Valley, 100 per cent.; Wanaka, 88 per cent.
