His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy wilj leave on Monday for, Invercargill to preside at the quarterly sittings of the Supreme Court.
Hr J. Lawrence Wright has returned from a post-graduate course at thq Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. Mr R. Harrison left this morning for Wellington to attend the General Labourers’ Conference. Captain J. J. Kernohan returned yesterday from Burnham. Sister R. C. Liggins, formerly of Noradene Private Hospital, is in Dunedin on special leave from Burnham camp.
Captain G. I. Black, who left for Addington this morning to carry out tho duties of adjutant of the Scottish Territorial Battalion, was given a send-ofl at_ the railway station by a large gathering of members of C Company of th« National Reserve Battalion, of whom he has been in command since the unit was organised. In the course of th« farewell ceremony reference was made to Captain Black’s efficiency as an active service officer and to his popularity among old soldier friends and colleagues. A suitable presentation wa< made.
The late Constable Wroblenski wa* accorded a police funeral this morning. After requiem mass at St. Bernadette’s Church, Forbury, the cortege proceeded to the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, accompanied by an escort of police officer* who, on arrival at the graveside, formed a guard of honour. Sir E. A. Batt has been re-elected chairman of the executive of the Automobile Association, Wellington. He i* now in his twelfth year in that position. Dr J. D. Salmond returned yesterday from Melbourne after representing the Youth Committee of the Presbyterian Church at the triennial meeting of the Joint Board of the Graded Lessons of Australia and New Zealand.
Mr L. R. Ward, commodore of the Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club, who is about to leave for England to train for the Navy, was met by his fellow members and presented with a gift in appreciation of his ser» vices to the club.
The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. O, Webb) unveiled a large portrait of tha late Prime Minister (Mr Savage) in the Runanga Hall last evening. Ml Webb referred to his long association with Mr Savage, the _ latter’s lifelong study of social questions and his determination to banish from the livea of the masses the degradation dne to want and the fear of want. He described Mr Savage as one of the greatest statesmen, whose vision and sympathy yet would influence social development beyond the Dominion as iii had within this country. A Wellington Association message states that Mr Charles <3. Camp, assistant secretary to the New Zealand Employers’ for the past 17j years, has been appointed .secretary* He was the employers’ representative with the New Zealand delegation to tho I. conference at Geneva in 1938, and visited many countries to study at first hand industrial conditions. Before he joined the federation He held many responsible Government positions. The appointment of Mr Robin Templeton Miller as second war correspondent with the N.Z.E.F. was announced to-day by the director of publicity, Mr J. T. Paul. When war was declared Mr Miller was a reporter on the staff of the-Auckland ‘Star.’ He was one of the first to enlist and was posted to the Second.,Divisiopal Signallers in tha First Echelon, with the rank of signalman. During the training period ia Trentham camp he edited and produced a unit newspaper. On arrival in Egyptj Signalman Miller became closely associated with the official news service of the N.Z.E.F.;; his work in this respeefj being most important in view of tha fact that Mr J. H. Hall (formerly editor of the ‘ Dominion ’ and the ‘ Sun ’), chief war correspondent, went to England with the Second Echelon.—Auckland Association message.
