GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE

[By Captain] MOTTO: TO SAVE LIFE. Battalion Council. Reports of tile various companies given at the monthly meeting of the Battalion Council show that G.L.B. work is in good-heart in Dunedin, there being 437 girls and 33 Officers in the Dunedin Battalion. The concert recently held proved a success,, both from an entertainment point of view and financially, .and a. good donation to the Patriotic Fund will be the result. It was decided to hold competitions for the cadet sections at the end of November. Ton cadets will be allowed for each section, the competitions to be: (a) Verse speaking of one of A. A. Milne's poems; (b) four physical exercises; (c) two verses and refrain of any child’s hymn, with a cadet conductor. Lieutenant Henderson, who has been appointed recently to 12th Dunedin Company, was welcomed to the council. Officers are requested to note particularly the following points which have been brought to notice through the concert;—Girls must on no account be permitted to wear jewellery while in uniform; bangles which will not come off must be fastened up the sleeve, and rings must be removed. Service medals should be worn on the left breast and section medals on the right, not both on the left. No awards which are not sanctioned by headquarters may be won at battalion concerts, competitions, parados, or other combined gatherings. Titles on girls’ uniforms must be correctly placed—“ Girls’ Life Brigade " immediately below the shoulder at the top of the sleeve, company number beneath, and “ Dunedin ” last—-in reverse order to that of officers’ titles.

Company Notes. 2nd Dunedin Company (Concord) reports that on August 10 the G.L.B. was in charge of the sweets stall at a bring-and-buy sale in aid of church funds. The juniors are very keen on their badge work, and arc working hard at wool embroidery. The cadets also find it fun collecting leaves for their books. Bth Dunedin Company (First Church) went for an enjoyable outing for the rambler’s badge, the route taken being up Fraser’s Gully, returning via Brockville road. Two of the cadets have been promoted to the junior section of the company. 'Badge work at present being studied includes first aid (elementary and advanced), local knowledge, and book-lovers. sth Dunedin Company (Sawyers Bay Presbyterian).—The attendance has been fairly regular lately, and there has been one new member added to the company The whole company has been taking first aid and signalling, but the seniors are further advanced. Three of the seniors have recently passed the household management and laundry examinations. Some of the girls are doing knitting, hobbies, and art needlework. 11th Dunedin Company (St. Kikla Methodist) baa been busy daring the past few weeks, but now that the concert and the competitions are over the girls are starting a course of home nursing as well as revising first aid, which some have been studying for some time. The n.e.o. has been training the girls in physical culture, and some time is spent each night in games. Some of the girls are at present practising a play to be given at a parents’ night, and perhaps at the annual Sunday school concert. There are 22 girls and two officers in the company and about 18 cadets, with two leaders. Kith Dunedin Company (Cavorshnm Presbyterian) is taking badge work hi sign ailing, knot-tying, and first aid. Numbers have been increased, and recently the chaplain visited the company and presented certificates won for art "needlework and elementary knottying. Four girls were enrolled. ' 4th Dunedin Company (South Dunedin Baptist) celebrated its eighth birthday on July ]J. the ladies of the Governing Committee entertainng the girls at supper. Games, items, and the presentation of awards won, together with a birthday cake, , all combined to make a very pleasant evening. The attendance has been well maintained, and the girls are at present doing physical training, local knowledge, life saving. and semaphore signalling for badges.
