GERMAN TREACHERY

BOGUS TOURING CIRCUS LONDON, June 1. A first-hand account of the German invasion of Luxemburg, received from ‘ The Times ’ correspondent with the French forces, shows that it was prepared with all the treachery and unsoldierly devices with which the world had already been nauseated. Ther» were the same activities of the infamous “ fifth column ” inside the country and the landing of parachutists in civilian clothes. The French detachments moving in were harassed by members of the Nazi “ fifth column,” who, dressed in civilian clothes and armed with German sub* machine guns, fired on them from the woods and formed nests of resistance in the valleys. . ... Apart from the interior organisation, the leader and staff of wnich were captured, more than 2,000 ‘ tourists are known to have entered Luxemburg from Germany recently. Having hidden, their arms, bands of them had been wandering about the country wearing knapsacks. According to plan, they were soon reinforced by parachutists dropped near the French frontier. A travelling circus turned out to b* principally manned by Germans, who overnight turned into soldiers. Tree* were felled across the roads, and many of the civilian motor cars that did get through were spattered with bullet marks. , , , ' As the French cavalry detachment* appeared crowds of Lu-Amuburgers who cried “ Long live France ” were fifed upon from behind. The French have proved that such firing came from “ fifth column ” Germans. The true Luxemburgers. especially those on the French frontier, are overwhelmingly pro-French, but one town was found to be full of Germans.
