(Received August 17, at 9.5 a.m.) Japanese gendarmes, co-operating with French police, raided a Chinese estate in the French Concession and seized 16 lorryloads of radio equipment reported to be the property of the Chungking Government. CHURCH HOSPITAL BOMBED CHUNGKING, August 16. (Received Ahgust 17, at 9.5 a.m.) The United Church of Canada’s hospital at Tzelutsing was considerably damaged by seven Japanese bombs which landed in the compound during a raid. SPAIN’S INTENTIONS EYES OH GIBRALTAR REPORTS OF TROOP CONCENTRATIONS GIBRALTAR, August 16. It is.reported from Ceuta that 16,000 Spanish troops landed from Spain, with guns and light medium tanks, and are proceeding inland from Tetuan. Their destination is believed to be the border of the international zone. There are also persistent rumours that Spain is entering the war against Britain. One suggestion is that if Spain does not taka Gibraltar the Italians will, meaning that Spain will permanently lose it. TERRIFIC EXPLOSION AMERICAN POWDER PLANT SEVERAL PEOPLE KILLED JOPLIN (Missouri)', August 16. (Received August 17, at 9.25 a.m.) There was a terrific explosion at the Atlas powder plant’s dynamite division. It is feared that sis people are dead. The plant was working at peak production on British orders. The greatest possible anti-sabotage precautions have been taken. The, entire 1,000-acre tract is fenced, 60 guards patrol day and night, and the area is floodlighted. COMMUNISM IN HOLLYWOOD

(Received August 17, at 8 a.m.) Replying to Communism charges, Mr, Frank Freeman, president of the Motion Pictures Producers’ Association, invited an investigation by the United States Government into any subversive or un-American activities. “We know that in fairness to the public a decision will be withheld' pending a complete and impartial investigation into tlie accusations,” he said. The Screen Actors’ Guild issued a statement that its members hated Nazism, Communism, and “ fifth columnists.” FINNISH CABINET TWO RESIGNATIONS HELSINKI, August 16. (Received August 17, at 12.10 p.rn.) M. Tanner and M. Heikkinin (Minister of Agriculture) have resigned from the Cabinet. M. Tanner disagreed with Cabinet’s Russian policy. CANADIAN NAVAL OFFICERS INTENSIVE TRAINING IN ENGLAND OTTAWA. August 16. (Received August 17, at 8 a.m.) The Naval Ministry announced the arrival in England of a draft of Canadian naval officers for intensive training and ultimate service in the Royal Navy.
