SPEEDING UP MEASURES HALVING TRAINING PERIOD ' MELBOURNE, August 16. (Received August 17, at 9 a.m.) Important steps to speed up the Empire air scheme were announced to-day by the Acting Minister for Air, Mr A. Fadden, who said the number of . pilots selected for training in Canada would be increased and the intake of pilot trainees correspondingly increased. Mr Fadden explained that the whole ided was to cut the training period by half.. TRAINING IN AUSTRALIA THIRTY-ONE THOUSAND MEN SELECTED. MELBOURNE, August 16. (Received August 17, at 8 a.m.) About 31,000 men have been selected for the Royal Australian Air Force under the Empire air scheme, the Air Minister (Mr Fadden) said to-day. Plana are now being completed for speeding up the output of pilots for despatch to Canada for advanced training. About 2,000 air-crew personnel are now undergoing elementary training, and intake at the flying schools from those selected is being steadily increased. About 600 will begin training on Monday, comprising 346 pilots, 160 ah - gunners, and 92 air observers.
