The veterinary surgeon’s examination of Padishah reveals that he is suffering from a broken pelvis. His owner will make every endeavour to save him to be used as a hack. Missed His Chance. JJoloyna was under offer to a northern buyer at 400 gs before he won the Wuolston Handicap on Thursday, and it now looks as if Alma's full brother would have been cheap at that price. Thursday’s race was easily his best performance, and he appears to have come more solid with age. He buried the opposition for speed, and finished on as

The Kurow Meeting. Having been granted permission to hold its annual race meeting on the Oamaru course, the committee, of the Kurow Jockey Club has decided to increase the stake by £215 to £955. Tho Kurow Cup will bo worth £l5O, including a trophy valued at £25.

Will Make Dunedin Guineas Interesting.

Two Dunedin Guineas candidates in Doria and Don’t Forget won over six furlongs on the opening day of the National fixture, and their meeting in the Dunedin Guineas in October will greatly add to the interest of the first mile classic race to be run this season.

Totalisator Investments at Riccarton.

During the first two days of the present Grand National meeting £121,076 passed through the totalisators, as compared with £113,761 last year. This total is the highest since the post-war boom was experienced. In 1932 only £48,221 was handled during the two days. Two-year-old Parade, Though the rising two-year-olds were entered for the parade at Riccarton on Thursday, owing to the state of the track, only five put in an appearance, and they sprinted down the straight. Mr H. J. Riddle’s filly by Nigger Minstrel from Spearmaid,_ a full sister to Nigger Boy, finished in front of Reiiardo, (Foxbridge—Aureola) and Miss Jessica (Tlieio —Sicilian), Advantage of Sound Track. Last year the Methven trainer, M. 0. MTigue, took his team engaged at the August meeting at Addington to Oamaru so that they might have the advantage of sound and dry tracks, and his horses won several races. This year C. S. Donald took his team to : Oamaru, and-during the first two days won twice with Marlene, and once eadh with Accountant and Captain Bolt. A Good Fee. Under the scale of riding fees W. Jenkins would have received £63 out of the stake for winning the Grand National Hurdles, but Mr Toxward told his jockey that he would make it £IOO if he won. Jenkins was for some years attached to the late S. G. Ware’s stable at Wingatui. and when that trainer went to. Australia to train Mr G; J. Barton’s team Jenkins went with him, and rode a number of winners in Australia.

Ran Badly. After his easy win in the heavy going over which the Winter Hurdles was run at Trentham last month, Jewelled Girdle was-expected to show up well in tho Grand National Hurdles on an equally heavy course, but after a mile and a-qunrtor had been covered he began to drift and finished a bad last. Now rising 11 vears old, tho best of this Kilbrouey gelding has probably been seen. Looked Unnecessary.

On the running of Aussia Ra in the Trial 'Hurdles and Grand National Hurdles, in which Limbohm beat him by a head and half a head respectively, there appeared to be very little cause for the inquiry held into Aussie Ra’s running. Just what the trainer and jockey’s explanations were were not made public, but it is well known that Aussie Ra is not seen at his best when the going is heavy. In his last three races Aussie Ra has had the bad luck to strike soft courses, and has finished second in each of them, Aussie Ra, by Australian Sun from Carine. is now rising nine years old.

Grand National Hurdles Winner. Mr O. J. Toxward, owner of Limbohm, also owned Lady Lucy when that mare won the New Zeaalrid Cup. Limbohm is by Limond from Bonny 'Briar, an English-bred mare which Mr Toxward purchased as a foal at 600 gs. When Bonny Briar was only two and a half years old she non a juvenile race at Wanganui under 8.12, and among the horses she beat in that race was Amythas, one of the- best horses ever raced in New Zealand. After winning the King Edward Memorial Handicap at Ellorslie Limbohm was sent to contest the Melbourne Cup, in which he was sent out third favourite. Ho ran a fair race, but failed to see out the two miles. While in Australia on that trip he won four races before he sprung a ligament and had to be put aside. Now 10 years old, he is quite sound again, and his success on Thursday yas due to his good jumping and stamina. It is Mr Toxward’s intention to race him over big country next season.

Horesmanship. When Rowi fell shortly after the start of the Canterbury- Handicap on Wednesday and catapulted P. Gallagher from the sulky, the driver earned the applause of the public with a quick recovery and a smart dash to his horse, who was still on the ground (savs the Christchurch ‘Press,-’).. Gallagher immediately had his horse under control, and by his quick action prevented him from careering round the track and interfering 'with other horses. It was a smart piece of work on the part of a good horseman. Remission of Taxation. i

The patriotic funds have been added to by the sum of £1.889 15s as a result of taxation remission on the trotting meeting held by the combined clubs at Addington last Anril. The secretary of the Canterbury Provincial Fund (Mr H. S. Feast) has received a cheque for £1,511 16s from the Treasury as the Canterbury share of the taxation remission.
