AND NOW THE "SMELLIES"
Two Swiss inventors have turned out an automatic electrically-oper-ated contraption whereby films will carry not only a sound track, but a “ smell ” track. During a recent' private demonstration in Berne they produced 20 odours synchronised with sound and sight for their sniffing audience. When the heroine walked through a field of violets the hall was filled with the scent of violets. When she was rushed to the hospital following an accident the audience smelled the ether. When the hero sped to her aid in a racing car, something like the smell of hot brake bands was in the air. And when they were finally married the scent of orange blossoms had everyone humming a wedding march. The inventors claim they can produce no less than 5,000 separate odours with their odorated film.
Their apparatus requires no operator and works automatically. The cost of installing the contraption, say the inventors, is well below the cost of installing sound equipment.
