WHY WORRY ABOUT FACTS?
Film audiences are so accustomed to having their history remade for them that Errol Flynn’s now film, ‘ Sea Hawk,’ will be somewhat of a surprise. Based on the seafaring life of the Elizabethan captain, Sir Francis Drake, the film disclaims any accuracy in its treatment of events. To avoid confusion Drake is renamed Thorne, “ because the story takes liberties with history.” An odd reason for Hollywood.
Elizabeth, by the way, remains Elizabeth, and Phillip the Second of Spain also is an historical character. The parts are played by Flora Robson, who had the same role in 1 Fire Over England,’ and Montagu Love. Phillip and his henchman, Alvarez (Claude Rains) are the villains of the piece, but of course are frustrated in the end. Flynn rather upsets the probable popular conception of Drake of the period.
