TRACK AND FIELD
HARRIER CLUB ACTIVITIES NOTES AND COMMENTS The Leith Club held a run from the Caversham Methodist Church last Saturday, the road men combining with the Moruington road pack and doing some very solid work. The senior team was to compete to-day in the TemukaTimaru road race. W. Percy, a young runner, was among the competitors, and should acquit himself well. Among, the junior members of the club, D. Arthur and G. Doig have been running well, llay Rigby, one of the keenest senior runners, has been training solidly of late, and should give a good account of himself in coming events. The club was recently entertained at the Fire Brigade station, members thoroughly appreciating the hospitality extended. For the Mornington Club’s run from the Caversham Methodist Hall, two packs were formed, 33 runners turning' out. The road pack, under the captain, George Munro, combined with the Leith road pack and ran to a fair distance past the Brighton bridge and hack. G. Munro and F. Croo'ke (Moruington) and D. Fineham (Leith) were well to the front in the run home. W. Gardiner, Andy Henderson, and Ken Grieg were well to the fore in the junior pack. S. F. Grave-
son and J. M‘Crone were also well up with the leader, W. Burrows. 'Peter Brown was running fairly well despite several weeks’ absence from the runs. Befor the run the members of the club had the pleasure of meeting Private J. F. Marett, who was on leave with the Third Echelon. T. 0. Kennedy, well known in Otago athletic circles, added ‘another win to his successes recently when he won the Wellington cross-country title. The race was a neck-and-neck tussle all the way between Kennedy and one of the Scottish Club runners. In a thrilling finish Kennedy won the race by onefifth of a second. The Anglican, Club welcomed three of its members on leave with the Third Echelon last week—George Armstrong, Alt'. Marrett, and Les. Logan. Alf. led the pack in fine style. Cyril Crawford was out after a few weeks’ absence, and is still running well. Keith Payne and Walter Norman are good clubmen who are always to be found amongst the first home. If they are to tackle any of the road races, however, they will have to settle down to some solid training. Jim Carruthers and Cliff Trezise show improvement with every run. and would be good, runners if they would settle down to it. Jack Caradus would be well advised to tackle track running this season, as ho seems more at home at distances up to one mile. That good trio of juniors—Jim Hyslop, Alan Wilson, and Fraser Mitchell—are all keen and eager to learn the finer points of running, and all three should have a season of track racing. Last week’s- rim from Mormngton School proved popular with all the members of the Caversham Club. The fast pack, keeping to the road all the way to the Coach and Horses and back to the school, thoroughly enjoyed their rim. Good form was shown by those who were travelling to Tiraaru for to-day’s big event. G. L. Austin especially showed excellent form. L. L. Hebbard, C. M’Gregor, and A. J. Barr were running very easily. Barr is training consistently and is getting the most out of his Saturday runs. He is preparing for some of the big events ahead. The juniors covered good country, and all returned to the school none the worse for their very strenuous run. L. K. White, J. M’Gregor, and B. G. Taylor were moving well all the way and seem to be very fit. Two of the members who were on leave from camp—S. I. George (club captain) and W. D. Morrison—were out last Saturday, and were given a warm welcome.
