A. AND P. SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, held on Thursday afternoon, was attended by Messrs W. Lee (president), in the chair, J. Allison, A. C. Begg, J. B. Blair, C. M. Bruce, S. P. Cameron, D. B. Craighead, J. Hellver, D. Ireland, B. S. Irwin, 0. T. M'Callum, J. Mitchell, W. S. Thomson, J. Young, Geoffrey Reid. J. R. Fairbairn, and El. M. Driver. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £213 16s 6d, and reported that the bank balance was £1,040 2s Id in credit, and outstanding cheques amounted to £39 19s. The Tahuna motor camp statement for the period ended August 31 and showing a profit of £6O Is 6d was submitted for approval, and it was agreed that the result was most satisfactory

considering the petrol restrictions in force during the period. The decision of the Grounds and .Buildings Committee to lease the seed Store nest to Brydone Hall for five years was approved. The lease and rents of the Brydone and Agricultural Halls for the wool season were also approved.

It was noted that the painting of the garage and seed store roofs was complete, and further repair work was left to the Grounds and Buildings Committee.

An application from the military authorities for the use of Tahuna Park during September was received and was loft to the Grounds and Buildings Committee to arrange after consultation with the authorities.

After discussion at the previous meeting the question of whether the Summer Show should bo held this year was again fully considered, and the fact that the farmers had been asked for an “ all-in ” effort for increased production, the petrol restrictions, the patriotic queen carnival being run. and the impossibility of obtaining the usual holiday made it obvious that it would not be possible

to run the show successfully, either from a stock or a financial aspect. It was unanimously agreed to abandon the full show programme for this year and ask the Light Horse Committee to go into the question of holding a Saturday afternoon mardi gras snow, which would include light horse competitions, to be run in conjunction with the patriotic queen carnival, the not proceeds to bo handed over •to this fund. It was decided that the next meeting be held on the • day of the horse parade, September 26. The Chairman extended the congratulations of the committee to Mr O. M. Bruce (treasurer). who had been appointed president of the Chamber of Commerce. He considered that this was a link between the Wo bodies which would extend the endeavour of the society for closer co-operation between town and country interests.
