FARMER IN TROUBLE
INTOXICATED IN CHARGE OF CAR LICENSE CANCELLED: FINED £25 James Andrew Smaill, aged 66; a retired farmer of Mosgiel, was ..charged in the Police Court this morning before Mr J. A. Bartholomew, S.M., with* being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car. Represented by Mr G. T. Baylee, he pleaded guilty to the offence. Senior-sergeant Vaughan, prosecuting, said Smaill was apprehended on the Main South road near Concord when driving in an erratic manner. He was taken to the police station and certified as unfit to drive a car. When stopped defendant stated he only had two drinks at Mosgiel and could drive a car better than anybody. Mr Baylee told the court his client had been suffering from influenza and felt in need of a little stimulant. He had consumed very little. There had been no damage to any person or vehicle Mr Bartholomew fined Smaill £2n, ordered him to pay medical expenses f2ls> and cancelled his driver's license for 12 months.
