SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Ouh Correspondent] OBITUARY. The death took place at Balclutha on Saturday ot Mr George Harrison Wyber, a well-known resident of South Otago. He was horn at Manuka Creek 05 years ago, being the fourth son of the late Mr and Airs Isaac Wyber. The family removed to Balclutha when deceased was a boy, and he attended the Balclutha District High School. On leaving school he das apprenticed to the * Glutha Leader ’ as a compositor, and on completing his time he went to Central Otago, where he engaged in flax-milling for a time prior to joining his brother Jack, who was in the bakery business at Milton. Deceased subsequently worked for other owners of the same business, and retired » few years ago. While in Balclutha Mr Wyber took a keen interest in the Clutha Football Club, and was a member of the senior team. Ho also joined the Loyal Dalton Lodge (ALU.) while in Balclutha, and was still a member ot the order at the time of his death. He married Miss Lctitia Mulrine, of Romahapa, and she survives him, together with three daughters and three sonsAlcsdamcs Borland (Dunedin). Jan Paterson (Waikouaiti), H. Littlejohn (Jlataura), Alossrs Gordon (Kaitan<*ata), Jack (Christchurch), and Reg. (Alilton). Another son (Mark) went to the Great War and died in Temuka some years ago. There are also two sisters and three brothers—Mosdames B. Wright (Dunedin) and B'. Jones (Milton), Messrs Jack (Christchurch), James (Dunedin), and Charles (Balclutha) . SOLDIERS FAREWELLED.
During the week-end many farewell functions were tendered soldiers on leave bv their friends. At Helensbrook (Milton) Gunner W. M'Faul was the recipient of a well-filled envelope. Private H. Dowdall was entertained at Milton by members of the Otago Power Bc/ard staff, of which ho was a member before enlisting, and he also received a monetary gilt. Residents of Kinness and North Branch (Milton) entertained Privates W. M'Elrea and T. Roberts, when they wore the recipients of wristlet watches. Private A. H. Annis was entertained by Milbnru friends and received a money belt. At Hillend Gunner IL' Burnside received a wristlet watch and Private G. Hall a lountain pen. At Purekireki Private H. M‘Donald was given a wristlet watch and other gifts, while Private I* .Written was handed a gift from the Owaka Patriotic Committee. At Kaitangata a public farewell was tendered Privates I. Clements, E, Mackie, J. Ramsay, and W. Anderson, when the mayor (Mr J. W. Fenton) presented the departing soldiers with monetary gifts. SPORTS ITEMS. Yesterday a Rugby team from the King’s High School second and third fifteens visited Balclutha and played a match with South Otago High School. The visitors, who were much heavier and faster than their opponents, won by 35 points to 12. This result was brought about chiefly by the hue play of M’Kay (King’s first-five) and Houston (who scored 20 points for tho winners). Alexander and Duncan were the liest backs or tho home team, while Callanan, Cochrane, and Gray wore tho pick of tho forwards. On Saturday teams representing the country schools in Tokomairiro district played Toko. D.H. School at Rugby and basketball. In both sections the* High School was successful, winningtho football by 14 to 6 and the basketball by Bto 7. , . . Tho best scores handed in by the Toko. Milton Men’s Golf Club in the week-end medal match w® re : ‘E B u ™ 96 30 —64, J. Bansome 99—32 —67. In the ladies’ modal match best scores were: Miss M. Gray 99-35-64 Mrs George 90 —18—72, Miss B. Wilson 105—32—73. J .... The first and second qualifying rounds for the Balclutha Ladies’ Golf Club B grade championship resulted:— Mrs Baxter 113—118 —-231, Mrs Grant 126 113 —239, Mrs Cochrane 117 —126 9 —249, Mrs Copland 132—119—251, Mrs Aitken 1 —254, Mrs Freeman 130—12 b —258, Mrs Grace 129—131—260. Results in the A grade championship: Mrs Moffat beat Miss Martin, Mrs Telford boat Mrs Kelly, Mrs Lyall beat Miss Grant. Mrs Sinclair beat Mrs Anderson. In tho B grade medal match net scores were; Mrs Lothian 83, Mrs Aitken 94, Mrs Copland 95, Miss Scofield 96 Mrs Egarr 97, Mrs Baxter 100, Mrs Grant 101. In the B grade knock-out Mrs Nicolson beat Mrs Cochrane. The Toko. Harrier Club brought the season to a close on Saturday night, when a social was held. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr W. Taylor, while Miss A. Wilson contributed vocal solos. During an interval the president (Mr R. Ilett), assisted by Mr J. R. Wilson, presented the various trophies won during the season. CLUTHA PRESBYTERY. At this month's meeting of the Clutha Presbytery it was decided that tho ordination of Mr A. 11. Scott as a Home Missionary take place at Lovell’s Flat Church on August 19,.the Moderator to preside and induct, the Rev. D. B. Ashford to preach, tho Rev. S T Niehools to address the congregation. Tho Rev. W. C. Comber reported on his visit to the Dominion P S.S.A. conference at Christchurch, aiid urged the advisability of those interested . paying visits to the various centres of activity (homes and orphanages) in Dunedin. It would be necessary for members to assist in collecting P.S.S.A. contributions, as Mr Coley (Dunedin) bad been granted leave of absence to undertake war work with the Y.M.C.A. It was announced that with few exceptions the charges in the Presbyterv had exceeded their mission quotas, the desire was expressed that more detailed information of personal work in mission fields be made for ministers. In response to a request from the Balclutha Session that a register of lay preachers be compiled, various names were mentioned. Members of Presbytery were asked to request sessions to forward names to the Theological Committee of Presbytery.
