After a good start, with War Loan temporarily exceeding par for the first! time since the crucial stage of the Battle for France, the stock markets lapsed into a sluggish condition. The war news from Africa contributed to the general shrinkage of gilt-edged securities and industrials, both of which are tending downwards.
