(Received August 9, at 12.35 p.m.) The Australian Youth Council has been declared an unlawful organisation under the Commonwealth Government’s powers to ban subversive associations. MERCHANT SHIPPING BRITAIN’S FOREIGN TONNAGE LONDON, August 8. The Ministry of Shipping revealed that more than 9,000,000 tons of foreign shipping, comprising vessels of 500 tons gross and over, are under the control of the British Empire and the Allies. The total includes 5,500,000 tons of Norwegian shipping and about 3,000,000 tons of Dutch. The Belgian and Polish Governments control 500,000. In addition Britain seized nearly 500,000 tons of Danish shipping and requisitioned 500.000 tons of French. Another 1.250.000 tons of neutral shipping is on time charter to Britain. This tonnage, distributed throughout the world, is free to engage in trade except contraband with the enemy.
