MEAT PRICES

*D PER LB INCREASE SANCTIONED [Special to the ‘ Stab.’] WELLINGTON, June 29. An all-round increase of a halfpenny per pound in the 'retail prices of meat has been approved by the Price Tribunal, to operate from July 1. This is announced on behalf of the Minister of Supply, who explains the importance of avoiding any complicated method of supervision of stock auction prices during winter which might debar farmers from adequate compensation for the extra cost of producing fat stock during later winter and spring. The Price Tribunal recognises that fresh meat prices rise sharply in winter., but points out that the halfpenny increase it approves is permissive, not an obligatory increase. Bacon and other goods known as small goods are excluded from the scope of the order.
