SCHEME TO CATCH "THE MUGS* SENT OUT 1,000 CIRCULARS A WEEK [Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 27. A fine of £3O was imposed on Raymond Dennison (24) when he pleaded guilty in the Police Court to five charges of sending circulars to person# with intent to induce them to apply to “ R. Burke ” with & view to obtaining advice for the purpose of wagering on horse races. He was also ordered to leave New Zealand forthwith. The police produced one of the circulars sent out by Dennison, who arrived from Australia towards the end of February. “ On his own admission ho sent out 1,000 circulars each week,’*' said Detective-sergeant M‘Hugh. “ Although he does not know tho horses, he says he was going to study their form and would tip good thing# to ‘ the mugs,’ who would send him £l. Ho says he got 20 replies weekly.” The magistrate, Mr Orr Walker: In the circular he says he would refund the £1 sent him if the horses ran unplaced. Detective-sergeant M'Hugh: But ho admitted to Detective-sergeant Alpiu that he had not refunded any money.
