May 25.—Poston Racing Club. June 1, 3. —Napier Park Racing Club. JOTTINGS Corrected Handicap. In the Beach Handicap al Hie I'orbnry Parle trots Sabu is on 12yds, not bit as published. Sold For £3 10s. Hotnroa, though a Stud Book horse, is reported to have been sold for £8 IC-. Though ho does not appear to have left many racehorses, his progeny have a good record in the show ring,. ha ving won 17 championships and 63 first pnV.es. Turned Out. Sailing Budy commenced the present season very attractively by winning three races, but since her form has not been reliable. Her stake winnings a.mounted to £495, and she has now been put out of work for lb,; remainder of the season. A Maiden Hurdler. Turaki, who has 9.0 in the hurdle race at Invercargill on Saturday, like all of Balboa’s progeny, can handle heavy going, and if he can jump ho should prove troublesome over a mile and a-half. In his races, particularly bigh-weight. handicaps, he has shown both stamina and speed. Riding Engagements. The following riding engagements for the Southland meeting next Saturday have been announced:—D. A. Hamill, Hunting Chorus, Wild Career; R. E. Humphries, Waitoru, Strathnlbyn, Black Bard, Cintilla; W. F. Ellis, Mona’s Song, Ortyx; J. L. Streathern, Peony Rost!, Amelita; E. J. Jennings, All Blood. Short Limits. In four of the principal races at Forbury Park on Thursday week the differences between the horses on the limit and those on the back marks is only 24yds. This may cause some crowding at the starts, especially in the Flying Handicap, in which the starting barrier is only a few yards from the turn out of the straight. Oamaru Trotting Meeting. Most of the horses engaged at the Oamaru trolling meeting on Saturday have also been handicapped to race at Forbury Park the following Thursday, and their form at Oamaru should furnish some guide to their chances next week. The Oamaru meeting will be conducted on a grass track, as compared with the dirt track at Forburj Park. Likely to Start in Awarua Handicap. Waitoru has been paid up for in both the Awarua and President’s Handicaps on Saturday, and will bo ridden by R. E. Humphries in whichever race he starts, ■ probably the former. He has been galloping well on the, Invercargill tracks lately, and yesterday morning ran a mile is lulin 54'3-ssec. ; On Riverton form Waitoru, with 8.10, will be strongly fancied. First in Open Company. Heidelberg is duo to make Ids debut in open company at Invercargill on Saturday, when he will contest the Awarua Handicap under 7.7. / He has been carrying big imposts in hack company, and it will be interesting to note how he shapes in open class. A big long-striding horse, he may require a strong horseman to get the best out of him. A Possible Light-weight. Silkwood, who is at home in heavy going, registered a good gallop at Invercargill yesterday morning when she chased Wild Career home over a mile in Imin 54 2-ssec This mare has 7.0 in the Awarua Handicap on Saturday, and showed she is fit and well by running second to Amelita over a mile at the Otautau meeting last month. A Small Field. Only six have been paid up for in the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase, to bo run over two and a-half miles at Invercargill on Saturday, with Slayer, 11.13, at the top of the list. He is likely to be much more forward than when ho raced at Riverton sis weeks ago, but may find it difficult to concede 321 b to Guste, who has already won three steeplechases this season. ■ An Unlikely Starter. Pandme, who failed badly at the Otautau meeting, may not be produced at Invercargill on Saturday if the going is heavy. He has done little work since his inglorious showing in his last appearance, when it was evident that he was hopelessly at sea on a heavy track. He will be given plenty of opportunities in coming weeks, and no undue risks will be taken with him. £3,045 in Stakes. The stakes offered al the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on June 3, total £3,045, a very big amount for a oneday meeting. The principal events are the All-aged Stakes, £6OO, and New Zealand Sapling Stakes, £1,200, for two-year-olds. In the former race three-year-olds will start from scratch, four-year-olds 24yds, and five-year-olds and upwards 48yds. Nominations are due on May 20 a 8 p.m. Trainer injured. W. Cosgrove met with a painful injury last Saturday while working a young Quite Sure two-year-old in a sulky. The novice was going along nicely on the course proper until it came to the gap that leads in to the inner clay, track, when it suddenly attempted to cut through the opening, and Cosgrove’s leg struck the railing with such force that the blue gum post snapped off close to the ground. The sufferer, immodidiately received medical attention, and several stitches were inserted in his leg. South Canterbury Winter Fixture. The winter meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will be held on May ]6 and 18, and the programme offers £2,600 in

The B.lloughtou Handicap, £3OO. and South Canterbury Handicap, £2OO (second dav) will each be run over a mile and a-quarter, and are the principal Hat races. The Oaiguiore Siooplcchaso, £l5O, on the fir-1 day is a hack event, but on the second day tiie Bnreora Steeplechase, £2OO, is an open rare. Nominations are due next Monday at 9 p.m. Chance On Paper. Horses aI, the bottom of the weights for the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase at the Southland meeting hove much the worst ol it (says the Southland ‘Times’l, espee.ally when Bandine is weighted only 71b above (bo minimum and Guste 91b, while Trisox has not been harshly treated with 10.9. Gay Boa'- ,en-e is rather an interesting one. At the Otautau meeting Guste gave him 121 b and beat him, ami now Gusto has lo concede him only 91b, or 31b better term- for beating him. On paper Gay Boa can he given no chance at all with Guste. Wild Career and Peony Rose. Wild Career is said not to favour heavy triing, but he has won on it, ami as the winner of the Riverton Gup has been nicely treated with 8.7 in the Awarua Handicap on Saturday. He will be ridden by D. A. Hamill, anil this will reduce his impost to 8.0. In the Riverton Cup be earned 8,0 and beat Peony Rose 8.2 a neck. In the Otautau Cup a fortnight ago Peony Ro-e 8.7 won from Ashaway 7.2£ and Mild Career 8.10 on a heavy course, and in Saturday's race Peony Rose has been handicapped to meet the Riverton Cup winner on 8!b worse terms, ■ Both 1 cony Rose and Wild Career’s owners are likely to claim apprentice allowances, and on Riverton Cup form Wild Career should turn the tables on Peony Rose. Neglecting Stayers. In commenting on the programme for the Forbury Park meeting next week, the ‘Pro--’ says; “There is not .a single race of two miles on the programme, a sure si-rn that the club is not doing its best to encourage the right class of pacer or trotter The Forbury Park Club has eyidcnily followed the example set by the Ashburton Trotting Club, winch, however, holds its meetings on a track of one mile and three furlongs in circumference. Jhe Ashburton course provides a true test tor Stavers, but at Forbury Park the track is only five furlongs in circumference. It is possible that at the next meeting of delegates lo the New Zealand Trotting Conference a remit making compulsory the inclusion of at least two races over two miles on an eight-race programme will be introduced. It would be fitting if the New Zealand Trotting Association fathered such a remit.”
