CORPORATION PLAYING AREAS

INADEQUATE DRESSING FACILITIES RUGBY UKHHTS GMTICIBM Criticism of the , inadequate' dressing facilities provided on. 1 many of the City Corporation’s playing areas was voiced at last night’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union, members expressing the opinion that'the’ City Council had a duty to the youth of the city in providing adequate accommodation. Those were the president (Mr DI C. Jolly) in the chair, Messrs A. C. Haynes, H. Harris,; V. G. Cavanagh, J. B. Woottoii, N. Reardon, I. Grant, A, Grant, R. W. S. Rotting, A. H. Cameron, W. J. Pearson, C. G. Gibbons, D. M. Spcdding, S. Butler, 0. J. Begg, W. G. Glengarry, H. G. Munro, D. H. Cunningham, and I. Glendining. Criticising the inadequate dressing accommodation and conveniences provided at Tonga Park, Mr Cavanagh said this was a “ very cheap sort of show.” The chairman (Mr Jolly) said that the union leased the ground from the City Council, but as they could not get dressing accommodation they should ask tne City, Council what it was prepared to do about it. ' - Mr Gibbons said that, considering the money that was paid- for the rental of corporation grounds in Dunedin, the accommodation on most of the grounds was inadequate, and it was often left to the clubs. to provide their own dressing accommodation. Mr Cavanagh said that when the City Council announced through the Press what it was doing in providing facilities for sport it should go further and provile docent accommodation. Apart from the Oval and Logan Park, where facilities were provided, the clubs bad done a lot lor themselves, and the union had assisted by subsidising clubs. The Chairman: It is time the sports bodies of Dunedin had a representative on the City Council. It has been needed for a long time. . Mr Cavanagh said that the union was acting only on behalf of the youth of the city. It was the duty of the City Council to provide playing facilities. Mr Haynes moved that the attention of the City Council be drawn to the lack of adequate dressing accommodation at Tonga Park and to the fact that unless this could be provided the union would be obliged to cancel its lease. Mr Wootton seconded the motion, which was carried. , , ~ A discussion took place concerning the use of Culling, de Carle, and Hancock Parks during the present season, it being pointed out that they would not be required for match purposes this season, but that schools in the south end would require them for practice purposes. The opinion was expressed that the at. Kilda Borough Council had a duty to the children in its district to provide them with suitable playing areas, and Hr H. Hams and the- secretary (Mr B. S. U ilson) were appointed to approach the St. Ivilaa Borough Council and the Ocean Beach Domain Board regarding a reduction in the rentals of these three grounds. , ENTRY CONFIRMED.
