[From Our Coreewoxdent] GENERAL. The amount so far received by the Lawrence branch in connection with the Otago Provincial Patriotic Fund is £l9 18s 6d. The closing, day of the Tuapeka Bowling Club was held on the Lawrence greens. In a mixed pairs tournament Parkhill and Thomson defeated W. G. M/Kinlay and Mrs Parkhill. The presentation of a trophy for the ladies’ singles competition was held over owing to the absence of the winner. Miss. Robertson. Miss Bulfin was the runner-up in this competition. LAWRENCE SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the biennial meeting _of householders held at Lawrence this week the following committee was elected: — Messrs F. J. -Gray. G. Weston, D. Christie, E. J. Weatherall, A. J. M'Kinlay. G. W. Bartlett, and E. Aimers, MAGISTRATE’S COURT. A travelling salesman, Gordon Felix Cook, of Alexandra, appeared in the Lawrence Magistrate’s Court on Monday before Mr H. J. Dixon. S.M. He was, charged with the theft of grain from a sued at Clydevale. Ho pleaded guilty to having, stolen two jacks, of wheat and one of oats, of a total value of £2 13s, the property of John Deaker, of Clydevale, the offence having occurred on March 19 last. Cook was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months ■ if called upon. In addition, he was ordered to pay £2 13a as value of stolen property and witness’s expenses, 7s 6d. Con-’ stable Mathieson, of Waitahuna. said the defendant had been selling fruit from a van and had camped in Deaker’s shed for the nightAn application, by Janet, May-Miller (Mr Moore) for a prospecting license for 30 acres of Crown land, Rankle- : burn S.D. was granted. An application by Samuel Irvine Bickerstaff to surrender a special quartz claim was accepted. Application by Mary Marchbanks Mitchell (Mr Moore) for prospecting licenses for three acres of Crown land at Taieri Mouth and for 18 acres of Crown lands in Waihola S.D. were granted. Francis Dysaski v. Samuel Bickerstaff for £ls. Judgment for plaintiff £ls; court costs, £1 12s; solicitor’s fee. £2 12s. John Thomas Johnson v. Frank Dysaski, £2O. Judgment for defendant; witness’s expenses, £1 10s; solicitor’s fee, £2 2s. OBITUARY. A respected resident of Lawrence, Mr George Humphrey, died on Saturday morning at the residence of his sister, Mrs F. Booth, Irvin© street, Lawrence. He was born in Lawrence of pioneering parents 58 years ago and spent most of his life in the district. He was 17 years with Messrs Herbert and Co. and prior to that was employed by Messrs Browne ' Bros. Latterly he had engaged in mining, but for the last 12 months had been failing in health. His nearest relatives are his sister, Mrs Booth, and a brother, Mr Thomas Humphrey, of Ryal Bush, Southland.
