OTA6O WOMEN S TITLE VISITING PLAYERS IN FORM Heading this morning’s list of eight contestants who qualified for match pUfy; for the Otago women’s provincial golf-championships as the result of the second qualifying round, were two visiting players, one of whom, Miss Claire Smith, of Invercargill, scored 80, re- - presenting the best card so far of the tournament. This performance by Miss Smith was all the more meritorious because misty rain that was in. itself most unpleasant, slowed up the course at Balxnacewen considerably. The conditions demanded accuracy, and most of those who qualified adapted themselves to the' heavy going very well. Three players—Miss Brewer, Mrs Burnett, and . Miss Meek —tied for eighth place with scores of 187, and on the count back over the last nine holes of the two rounds. Mrs Burnett qualified. .Miss, Smith was out in 39, Wjiich. represented brilliant golf. She arils not perturbed in the slightest by the slow' fairways and greens. Her first v half—2 under bogey figures—was as follows:—s, 4,3, 3,6, 4,6, 5, 3. Her score,, over the other nine holes was 41/ her only lapses being 6’s at Tipperary and Manuka, • Miss Hudson, the holder of the Canterbury title, ' scored 85; she was out in 43 and did the remaining holes in 42. A surprise :: was the game produced by Miss Stand, who is at present well in form. She qualified third, and Mrs Dodgshun, who was next, lapsed badly with a score of 92. The match play will he completed to-moirow. QUALIFYING ROUNDS. The eight players who qualified for match play over the two rounds for the provincial title were as follows: Miss Claire Smith (Invercargill) 83— , 80—163, Miss Zpe Hudson (Canterbury) 82—85—167, Mrs Dodgshun (Otago) 83—92—175, Mrs Lawless (#tago) 88—95—183, Mrs Wright (Otago) 94—89—183, Mrs- M'Kenzie (Otago) 90—96—186, Mrs Burnett (Otago) 91—96t—187, : HANDICAP COMPETITIONS. ; The two best: cards in yesterday’s medal 'round were those of Mrs Climie and Mrs Amodeo, 88—16—72 arid 95 23—72 respectively. They: were followed by Mrs Sparrow, 98—22—76, Miss Hudson 83—5—77,.Miss .Shand-87—10 —77, Mrs Macpherson 89—12—77. Mrs Stirling 99—<10—77, and Mrs M‘Kenzie 90—13—77. ' The Canadian .foursome in the afterBoon was an interesting competition. Three pairs Miss Elliott and Miss Brewer, Miss Hudson and Mrs Twyford. and Mrs Blair and Mrs. Mitchell—all finished '4 .down, and Miss . Elliott and Miss Brewer won on the countback. Miss Meek and Miss Shand were 5 down, and Mrs Dodgshun and Mrs Stirling 6 down.
