POLICE COURT
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) ADMITTED TO PROBATION, Alexander Dobson appeared for sen-tence-on a charge of having obtained from C. A. Orlowski the sum of £lO by falsely representing that a radio set which'he had sold to the complainant was his own unencumbered property. The Magistrate said that as the accused had been in custody for' several days, and in view of the report of the probation officer, he would be admitted to probation for a period of two years, restitution of the amount of £lO to be made, TRESPASS ON RACECOURSE. Pleading guilty to trespassing upon the Wingatui racecourse on April 6, Henry Corsar, who, the police said, had been convicted on a charge of bookmaking and prohibited from attending race meetings, was fined 20s, with costs (10s). OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR ALLEGED. Noel Marsellas Holland was charged with having behaved in an offensive manner in the Town Belt on Saturday, April 6. Mr W. J. Meade, who appeared for the accused, asked tor an adjournment until Wednesday next," and this was granted. I REMANDED. A charge of indecent exposure in David street, - Gaversham, on Saturday last, was.preferredagainst John James Healey.- On the application of counsel (Mr E. J. Anderson) the accused was remanded for a week, bail being fixed at £SO, with one surety of £SO, a condition being that he report daily to the police. FORGERY AND THEFT. Robert Charles Kerch was charged with having committed forgery in endorsing a cheque for £8 in the name of Hislop and Gibson, which had been drawn by the Australian Provincial Assurance Association Ltd. There was a further charge Of theft of a letter and a cheque for £B, the property of the association. Evidence was given by Alexander H. Stewart, assistant manager of the Law Courts Hotel, to whom the cheque had been tendered, and by Charles R. N. Shallcrass, provincial manager of the A.P.A. Association, by whom the accused had been employed. The latter witness said.that Heron had been dismissed on February 6 and bad no authority to possess any document issued by the firm.' Further evidence was given by William. Henry Patrick, insurance agent, James Henry Sizen, secretary to Messrs Hislop and Gibson, Detective-sergeant Thomas, of Timaru, who read a statement in which -the accused admitted having endorsed the cheque, stating that money was owing to him by the association for car allowance, and by Detective Brown, who read statements_ made to him- by the accused, admitting Laving wrongfully retained and used the cheque. Accused, who pleaded guilty to each charge, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
