OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIP FiRSJJUALIFYIHfiMUim; Good golfing weather prevailed for the opening of < the Otago- women’s open championship and handicap tournament at Balmacewen links this morning. Althpujgh - the dew and the slight mist later made the going slightly heavy, the greens and fairways were in excellent order, and some good cards were turned in. The first qualifying round was held, all the competitors getting away in good time. Those finishing in the lead of the qualifying round ‘of the championship all played to form. Miss Zoe Hudson, the Canterbury open champion, lived up to her reputation by turning in a gross 82, and Miss C. Smith, a three handicap player from Invercargill, finished close behind with 83, as also did MrsDodgshun. Mrs Climie turned in a very good 88, considering her 16 handicap, which brought her net score down to two under par and put her at the head of the list for the handicap event. The secretary advises_ that there are still a number of visitors who have not as yet obtained partners for the Cook Cup, the mixed foursomes which will be held on Saturday. Those finishing in the lead for the championship are:— ' Miss Hudson (Christchurch) 82. Mrs Dodgshun 83. Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) 83. Miss K. Shand 87. Mrs Lawless 88.
