MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting: of the council of the University of Otago was held yesterday afternoon, the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) being in the chair. _ The council approved of the re-election of Dr Hercus as dean of the faculty of medicine, and Dr M. N. Watt as dean’s associate for the ensuing three years, LECTURES ON RUSSIA. * A letter was received from Mr Danilow offering to deliver lectures on Russian history. ... , . , It was decided! that, while the board appreciated this offer, it felt that the time was inopportune for such lectures. It was further decided that this matter be referred to a committee of the Board to be set up later to consider a course of public lectures within the university. PROFESSORIAL RECOMtyENDA: TIONS. FOREIGN REFUGEES.Tho Dean of the Medical Faculty submitted an application from Dr R. Munk for admission to a special three years course for foreign refugees^ Dr Hercus explained that, owing to a regrettable mistake, for which he had to take responsibility, this application had not been placed before the board at its last meeting, although it had been received in good time and was accompanied! by a notification that the application had been granted by the New Zealand Medical Council. This had resulted in an injustice being done to the applicant, as, had the application been considered witlv-others at the last meeting it would have been passed. Dr Hercus moved that the application be granted in terms set out therein,: admission to be for the present session. Dr Fitzgerald opposed the motion. The council, he said, had been assured that no more refugees would be admitted, and now Ihere was another coming forward. The Chancellor, pointed out that the name' of this lady had really been included in the list of applications already approved by the Medical Committee, but had inadvertently been omitted from those placed before the council. The motion was agreed to on the voices. . _ A similar application by Dr Farb tor admission to a special course was deferred! pending the decision of the New Zealand Medical Council. AMERICAN APPLICANTS. Tho Dean of the Medical Faculty reported having received sundry requests from persons living in America to be admitted to the Medical School. Authority given by the Medical Committee to Dr # Hercus to decline these requests in view of the fact that accommodation was not available was confirmed by the council. HOSPITAL BOARD GRANTS. A letter was received from the Hospital Board advising that the annual grant to the Medical School had been increased to £1,500, hut that to the Dental School would remain at £BOO. Dr J. Fitzgerald said that the board was not doing justice to the council. The grant of £BOO to the Dental School was not commensurate with the work done by that school for the board. Protests had been made under this head before, hut had always received short shrift. Other boards 'had made much greater contributions in this conection. It was decided to express the thanks of the council to the Hospital Board for the grant to the Medical School. A motion expressing regret at the inadequacy of the Dental School grant was also carried, Mr A. Steel dissenting. It was decided to refer the matter to the Finance Committee for consideration,
