Williams, borough engineer, reported:—Water tables on the Ara-i moa highway had been cleaned and metal raked in. The foul sewer from Magnetic street to Mussel Bay had been opened up and repaired,. It was found to be in a very bad state, nearly every joint leaking and! the trench much undermined. Repairs were of a substantial nature, and the necessary asphalt work had been completed. A small blockage had occurred in the Burns street sewer and two tests were made. Since his last report the staff for one week had been engaged on repairs to the Waitati road. Two men had been completing the cleaning of the water tables, some metal had! beenspread on the repaired portions, and the road was now much improved. The intersection of Scotia street with the Highway and also Berpicia street
had been topdressed and sprayed. The re-formation of Slant street' had been completed, and some metal spread on portions where necessary. The- tracks: on the belt had been cleaned and surfaced some trees'had: been removed from Constitution street. •' Instructions had been given to commence kerbing in. Wickliffe Terrace, and it was suggested that it should; follow the line of the old kerb for the greater portion of the distance, but it would be advisable to widen it out to Bft near its intersection with Burns street. This would necessitate the shifting of a telephone pole. It would be an improvement if thi* pole were removed, as it constituted a danger to' pedestrians. The nursery, had been attended to and 4,000 young pinus insignus planted out. A recent examination of the supplementary; re- j " servoir showed a large accumulation of silt, and instructions had been given to have it removed as soon as convenient. STANDING COMMITTEE. The committee reported;—The gag manager in his report for the month ; states that 17$ tons of coal were carbonised, yielding 230.900 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,460 cubic feet a ton. The manufacturing plant had given no trouble during • the month. Advice had been received from the secretary of the Department of Labour stating that the generous subsidies of 1939- granted in connection with the employment of workers on scheme IS could again be made available to those employing authorities who desired assistance by way of subsidised labour in connection with works proposed to be carried out during the year 1940- The committee had referred the to the engineer to, look into the position and submit a report to the next meeting of the com- • mittee. An' early start is to be mad* on the work of 'constructing a kerb in Wickliffe Terrace between Daly street and Burns street. It is proposed to widen the path at the corner of Burns . ; street, necessitating the shifting of a telegraph pole at the corner.—Approved, the owner of the property at +he corner in question to be approached*
