AN ACTIVE OCTOGENARIAN

As a friendly gesture to the United States the late President Masaryk of Czeeho-Slovakia once invited Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford to spend a week-end with him at Lana, his official country seat outside .Prague. Masaryk, the father of Czecno-Slova-kia, was a great man, a profound philosopher, but he was lacking in what is called small talk, and when he and his two guests strolled round the beautiful Lana Park on the Sunday afternoon the, conversation languished. In order to .enliven matters Douglas vaulted over a bench, and the octogenarian President performed the same feat. Fairbanks then walked for a while on his hands, and to his amazement the philosopher, without a moment’s hesitation, showed that this, too, was among his accomplishments. Finally, as the conversation between displayed no sign of improving, Fairbanks balanced a cigar on his chin, and Masaryk with a laugh acknowledged himself beaten.
