—Ministerial.-—* The Minister of Defence ([Hon. F< Jones) accompanied by his private secretary (Mr F. M. Sherwood) p arrived yesterday afternoon from WellingtonHe was engaged in .departmental business and is receiving several private deputations to-day. He will return north to-morrow. Mr J. Sutherland Ross left thin morning for Wellington. Lieutenant-colonel A. S. Falconer, M.C. D. 5.0., Officer Commanding the 23rd Canterbury-Otago Battalion, ar. rived in Dunedin by car from Burnham yesterday on final leave. , . . Lieutenant F. R. Brebner arrived in Dunedin to-day from Trentham on final leave before going overseas with tha second echelon ■of tha New Zealand Expeditionary Force. „ , The Rt. Rev. G. V, Gerard, Bishop of Waiapu and senior chaplain to" the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is to leave New Zealand with the second echelon. He will go into camp at Papakura immediately after Easter until the time of the departure of the troops. At yesterday’s meeting of the Victoria League, Otago Branch (Inc.), the Chairman (Mr A. H. Allen) referred to the loss of four esteemed member* during the past year. These were LadyAlien, Mrs F. E. Clapperton, Mrs T. Fergus, and Mr W. T. Monkman who had been honorary auditor lor many years. The league and the city were the poorer for their passing. ■ At the meeting > of the Otago Land Board yesterday reference, was made to the approaching retirement on superannuation of the secretary,'-Mr James Torrance. Mr C., J. Inder, on behalf of the board of members, in asking Mr Torrance to accept a fountain pen as » token of their esteem, said that the smooth running of the monthly meetings had been due in' no Small measure to the efficiency of its secretary, and he thanked Mr Torrance for the assistance he had always so readily rendered to the members. Mr Inder’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs G. W. Stuart, J• S. Adams, and D. J. Ross. Messrs W. E. Shaw (Commissioner of Crown Lands) and H. A. Adams (Chief Surveyor) also expressed appreciation of Mr Torrance’s efficient services as secretary, and wished him many years of health and happiness in his retirement. Mr Torrance, in: replying, thanked tha members for their gift and remarks, and stated that he had had the unique experience that, during his 42 years’* service with the Lands and Survey Department, ho had for 40 years been connected with land boards, in Blenheim,Auckland, and Dunedin. Mr R. G. Brickell, of Dunedin, who for the past three and a-half years has been in England as resident engineer for the Air Ministry of Works Direc- - torate, has been granted a commission as flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve for works duties in France, Staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr G.
