Mr A. S. Holms, Waimahaka, and Mr J. Andrew, Hyde, were through, passengers by the 11.35 express from, the south this morning, bound for Wellington. Mr G. W. Lane left this morning for; Wellington. Mr A. C. Mills left this morning fois Christchurch. Cr W. H. Borne and Mr A. G. W* Dunningham, who attended the New, Zealand Libraries’ Conference at Wellington, returned by yesterday afternoon’s express. Mr John Farrell, advance manager for J. C. Williamson’s, arrived last night to make arrangements for the opening of the season of the Switzerland Ice Show and Ballet at His Majesty’s Theatre on March 16. At yesterday’s meeting of the Citizens’ Day Nursery (Inc.) Nurse Mary Dodd was presented with a certificate stating that she had completed her; training to the satisfaction of the committee.
At last night’s meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre the resignation ofl Mr A. C. Marett, secretary and delegate of the Kaikorai Club, was received! with regret, the president (Mr W. A* Jenkins) stating that Mr Marett was leaving Dunedin to join the Third Echelon of the Second New Zealand 1 Expeditionary Force. The Kaikorai Club had been well served by Mr Marett, and members wished him a saf® return and hoped that he would again resume his association with swimming l and his other sporting activities. At the annual meeting of the Stock' Exchange Association of New? Zealand Mr Andrew Hamilton* chairman of • the Wellington Stock; Exchange, was elected president, and Mr J. W. Frater, chairman of tha Auckland Stock Exchange, vice-presi-dent. The annual report of the Union! Football Club records with regret th® passing of an old and faithful supporter and coach in Mr D. Torrance. Dr C. E. Beeby, at present assistant Director of Education, will succeed Mi; Lambourne as from May 1, and in the meantime will act for the present director during his retiring leave. It is understood that applications will ba invited for the position of assistant director.—Wellington Press Association. On Monday evening the director* and staff of Charles Begg and Co. Ltd* entertained Mr and Mrs James Hastie, the occasion being the retirement o| Mr Hastie from the service of the company after an association with the firm, for 51 years. Musical items were rendered by Miss 8., Gallien and Mr J* Dixon, jun. Presentations were made to Mr Hastie on behalf of the firm by, Mr Charles E. Begg, general manager* and on behalf of the staff by Mr J. F* Hamburg. Mr Begg spoke in appreciative terms of the service Mr Hastie had rendered and of his loyalty t® the firm. Two directors and many members of the staff associated wit® Mr Hastie for long periods also spoke* In reply, Mr Hastie recalled the conditions under which he worked many years ago, and expressed his appreciation of the kindness and co-operation always extended to him by the management and staff.
The first awards 'of Proudfooti Scholarships, in. terms of the bequest of £2,500 made for this purpose hy th» late Mr G. C. Proudfoot, are announced by the Otago High Schools Board. The “triennial” scholarships of £25 a year, tenable for three years at the University of Otago, have been awarded to Francis K. Rennie (Otago Boys’ High School) and Rae A. Caddie (Otago Girls’ High School).-. The “ an* nual ” scholarships of £lO, tenable foq one year at.the respective nigh schools* go to James E. M‘Coy and (Brian E.-' Pierard (Otago Boys’ High School) and! Bertha E. Gosden and Doreen M. Bycroft (Otago Girls’ High School). The hoard also announces that the General Harry Fulton Memorial Scholarship ofi £l6 a year, tenable for three years ati any college of the University of New; Zealand, has been awarded to E. R. GScott, an ex-pupil of the Otago Boyst High School. Francis K. Rennie, to whom this scholarship was previously awarded, has become ineligible to hold it because of the award to him of tha Proudfoot “ triennial ” Scholarship. Guests at the Grand Hotel are Mq F.
