There was an attendance of about 40 at a meeting addressed by the llev. A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P. for Oainaru, at Milton on Monday night. Mr W. J. Cockburn (mayor) presided. Mr Nordmeyer dealt with the monetary situation, exchange control and import selection, and many other subjects, and quoted figures and facts to justify the Government’s policy. He also detailed the financial transactions of the Government for the current year, and said that on present indications a surplus was probable on March 31. Regarding the agitation in some quarters to raise a war loan, Mr Nordmeyer said ho believed that New Zealand could finance the war without having recourse to private inoneyholders. Ho said that if the war was to be financed as some people would like, the interest bill would become unbearable. He showed how under the present regulations the Government could secure all the money inquired through the Reserve Bank. He criticised the actions
of the Opposition before the last election. He concluded by stating that the Labour Party was determined to expand the wellbeing of the people. At the conclusion of his address the speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. GENERAL. At a meeting of the employees of M'Skimming and Co. Ltd.. Benhar, last week, it was unanimously decided to make voluntary donations each week from wages to patriotic funds so long as funds were required. Owing to the unsettled weather the number of lambs coming forward to the South Otago freezing works has fallen off considerably, and on four days last week only some 7,000 were dealt with. Up to Friday last the total number killed was 101,318, compared with 118,900 at the same date last year. It is expected, however, that the works will again be busy in a week or 10 days’ time, when rape lambs begin to come forward.
