Rear-Admiral Byrd wirelessed: “Despite fog, gales, and ice pack, we reae.hed and photographed by plane the long-sought south Pacific coast of Antarctica, 1,200 miles east of Little America. In addition to filling in 200 miles of new coast we discovered a vast mountain range to the south, rearing thousands of feet above sea level, an ice-covered island 80 miles off shore, mountains to the southeast, and a great pack-enclosed sea. The discoveries followed tho Bear of Oakland’s 18-day battle with icebergs and blizzards.”
