CIVIC AFFAIRS

CITY COUNCIL MEETING .. The fortnightly meeting of the City : Council was held last night, the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) presiding. In attendance were Crs D. G. M'Millan, M.P., Jt. Wilson, M. C. Henderson, R. Walls, J. W. Munro, M.P., J. M'Crao, E. J. Smith, W. B, Taverner, P. G. Connolly, and D. C. Cameron. Prior to the council proceedings a meeting of the Drainage and Sewerage Board was held, formal business being transacted. HILL TRANSPORT SERVICES. When C. Gibson presented the Trans•port Committee’s report Cr M'Millan asked if the sub-committee appointed some time ago to investigate the reorganisation of the hill transport services had yet furnished a report. Ho also’-askcd if tho committee could look into, tho position of passengers boarding the Stuart street tram at the Octagon, and have them provided with opportunities of obtaining a through ticket to Maori Hill—a privilege they were at present denied. Gr Connolly said, as one of the subcommittee appointed last year, he could state that an inspection of the hill services had . been made. A report had been promised for the middle of February, and he thought it time tho business should be completed. Cr Gibson claimed pressure of work had prevented his preparing a report before this, and he could not see any likelihood of its being ready for another three weeks, Cr M'Millan’s question would be considered. The report was adopted. TENDERS. . Tenders were accepted as follows: “ Caterpillar ” tractor, £650, Messrs Gough, Gough, and Hamer Ltd.; two tons scrap copper, New Zealand Machinery Exchange, £56 a ton; one and a-half tons scrap copper, C. and T. Price, £54 3s 4cl a ton; two and a-balf tons scrap. cbpp.er,.Valo and Co., Christchurch, £sl 6s 8d a ton; four tons scrap mild steel,'Dunedin Engineering and Steel Co., £1 5s a ton; four tons scrap cast iron/A. and T. Burt Ltd., £3 10s a ton.
