RECRUITING APPEALS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The more I ponder Mr Savage’s appeal for recruits the more I wonder whether he himself really understands what he is asking us to fight for. Both Stalin and Hitler profess to aim at raising the standard of living and at economic) national self-sufficiency. Hoes our quarrel with them concern what is the best method of doing these things? Or are we fighting for something that does not abolish the importance of economic considerations, but transcends them in importance—namely, religious, intellectual, and political freedom? If this were made clear in an appeal for recruits surely it would do much good. —I am, etc., Volunteer. February 22.
