JOTTINGS To-morrow at Wingatui. The first race at Wingatui to-mor-row is scheduled! to start at 12.30, and special trains will leave for the course at 11.10, 11.35, and 11.50. A special train will leave Dunedin for Invercargill at 6.40 to-morrow evening, and on Sunday morning a special will leave Wingatui at 7.50 and Dunedin at 8.30 for Christchurch and intermediate stations. Willie Win. The Midsummer Handicap winner, Willie Win, carried his 9.1 in the Cup yesterday well, and put in a fine run at the finish after being about seventh into tho straight. Prominent Visitors. Among the visitors at Wingatui yesterday were Alessrs A. S. Elworthy, president of the. New Zealand Racing Conference, and H. F. Nicol, president of tho New Zealand Trotting Association. Where Winners Came From. Oamaru, Riccarton, and Invercargill stables each provided two winners yesterday, Riverton and Mosgiel Park turning out the other two. Wingatuitrained horses secured three seconds and two thirds.

The Starting at Wingatui. Air Gieseler had some badly-man-nered horses to deal with at Wingatui yesterday, but taken on the whole, his work at tho starting barrier was quite equal to the best he has shown at this centre. Good Work. The workers who were responsible for cleaning up the grounds at Wingatui after the big demonstration on Tuesday made an excellent job, and when the Cup meeting opened yesterday the only evidence of Tuesday’s, function was somo festoons in the members’ stand. Slow Time for Cup. Only twice, Mount Boa (1931, 2rnin 42 2-ssec), and Vintage (1934, 2min 36scc), during the past two decades has the winner’s time in the Dunedin Cup been slower than the 2min Sosec Sparkle took in yesterday’s race. Began Well. v Norseman began better in yesterday’s Cup than he usually does, and was always well placed until turning for home, where he appeared to lose some ground. He put in a good run at tho finish, but appeared to be crowded over the final 50yds. Cost 70gs, The winner of yesterday’s Trial Handicap, The Raker, was purchased at the national yearling sales, 1938, by his present owner, Mr W. J. Dore, of South Canterbury, at 70gs. By Surveyor, The Raker’s dam, Kippet Lee, is by* Arausio from Snowshoe, the dam of Arctic King, White Doe and Arctic Star, and a half-sister to Fleeting, tho dam of Inflation. Record Holders’ Win. Two horses, Pink Bond and Spanish Lad, time record holders for four and six furlongs on the Wingatui course respectively, were returned winners yesterday, and the former was allowed to return an outsize dividend. It was her second win this season, her previous success being scored at Wyndham over six furlongs.

March 2.—lnvercargill T.C. March 9.—Timaru T.C. March 16.—Taranaki T.C. March 16. —Cheviot T.C. March 16.—Wyndham T.C. March 23, 27, 28.—New Zealand Metropolitan T.C. March 23, 25. —Hawera T.C. March 30 —Wanganui T.C. April 6.—Thames T.C. April 13.—Cambridge T.C. April 6.—Ashburton . T.C. April 17, 20.—Wellington T.C. April 27.—Auckland T.C. April 27.—Westland T.C. Journey Too Far. Alma, who looks a fitter mare now than at any period of her career, ran a good race in yesterday’s Cup for over a mile and a-quarter, but then began to drift, and at the post only Queen of Song and Thermidor were behind her. Ran Below Form. From the time the handicap appeared the Oaraaru-trained mare, Thermidor, was one of the early fancies for the Dunedin Cup, but her running yesterday was the worst form this mare has over shown. She was last practically the whole way, and appeared to be unable to improve her position at any stage of the race. Inquiry. After the Trial Handicap the stipendiary steward inquired into an apparent interference by The Raker with Palmar about 50yds "from the post. Didham (rider of Palmar) said that when The Raker shied he called out to W. F. Ellis (rider of The Raker), and the latter straightened his mount up without causing his mount any interference. It was not necessary to call a meeting of the Judicial Committee. Gameness and Vigorous Riding Told. When Scold won the President’s Handicap yesterday she gave Mr G. ,R. Macdonald his second success during the afternoon. With .less than a furlong

to go both Royal Style and Cherokee appeared to have' the Mysotis filly in trouble, and Royal Style definitely headed her opposite the lawn stand. It was gameness and vigorous riding by P. Spratt that eventually lauded her the winner. Past His Best. No horse paraded at Wingatui yesterday looked better in the parade than Paper Slipper, and few horses raced worse. Though made a hot favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, Paper Slipper was beaten before half the journey had been covered. Paper Slipper has not won a race since he scored in the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton last Easter. The Champagne Stakes Winner. Shikari gave the Canterbury owner, Mr G. R. Macdonald, his first win in the D.J.C. Champagne Stakes, and his victory was full of merit, as he stood Doria up several lengths at the start. Shikari is by Bulandshar by Blandford from a granddaughter of Carbine, and his dam, Capercailzie, is by Autumnns from Kerriemuir. bv Clanranald from Wadowla, by Trenton from Azalia (imp.). Sectional Times. Though the time for the Dunedin Cup yesterday was 2sec slower than Queen of Song’s last year, when she carried 141 b more than Sparkle, a fairly strong wind would account for some of the difference. A private watch-holder made the first two furlongs 27sec, half-mile 53 4-ssec, sis furlongs Imin 20sec, mile Imin 48sec, and the last half-mile 47scc. Received Bad Run, Capricious repeated her New Zealand Cnp performance by acting as runner-up in yesterday’s Cup. Capricious appeared to meet with interference more than once in the running, losing ground each time; but even with n better run it is doubtful if she could have beaten Sparkle, who was easing up at the finish. Capricious was not nominated for to-morrow. Three on End. Ballad won the Warrington Hurdles yesterday from end to end ; and made his score three in succession, having won twice on the same course at the Christmas meeting. He has greatly improved in his jumping during the past few months, but took a chance at the second to last fence yesterday. In addition to having a lot of pace on the flat, Ballad is also clever at making a recovery.

Never Out of the Ruck. | After his good finishing run in the Midsummer Handicap, and having done good work on the tracks since, his trainer expected Settlement to run well in yesterday’s Cup, and was disappointed at this Shambles gelding’s performance. Settlement ran about seventh or eighth all the way and never made any impression on the leaders. One of Balboa’s Best. Spanish Lad scored fairly easily in the Publicans’ Handicap yesterday, and was well handled by the Invercargill apprentice, W. F-. Ellis, who got him away well and kept him always near the front. Spanish Lad is unquestionably one of the best of the last of Balboa’s progeny. Concertpitch and Boswell are two other good ones who are helping to keep this defunct sire’s name green. Sparkle’s Record. It is an old adage that “ size doesn’t win horse races.” Sparkle, winner of yesterday’s Cup, may not have .size, but she has speed and stamina and an eagerness to run. During the past fortnight she has dead-heated for first place over a mile and a-quarter at Core, and followed that performance up by winning the Winton Cnp last Friday. She was trained to the hour for yesterday’s race, and her last four starts have resulted in three wins and a third. Since the Christmas meeting at Wingatui Sparkle has started nine, times for three wins and a dead-heat, three seconds and a third, and has won £1,005 in stakes besides £l2O in trophies. Sire of Cup Winner. Colonel Cygnus, sire of Sparkle, yesterday’s Cup winner, was imported from Ireland by Mr J. M. Samson, who personally selected him on his last trip Home. Colonel Cygnus is by Cygnus, by Sunstar from Malgalini, by William the Third, and was not raced until he was a four-year-old, when he won four times (three times over a mile and a-quarter), and was three times second. He is closely related on his' dam’s side to Camerouian, and to a great-great-granddam of Sundridge. He traces directly back to a mare by Musket, the sire of Carbine. Lambert, the dam of Sparkle, is by Tractor, whose dam (Gravitation) was a full sister to William the Third, so Sparkle claims St. Simon blood on both sides of her pedigree. At Mr Samson’s dispersal sale held in 1933 Colonel Cygnus was purchased by Mr W. T. Hazlett at-llOgs. Previous Winners.
