TRIUMPHANT HOMECOMING
Huge Crowds Acclaim Achilles VICTORS MARCH THROUGH CITY A Wonderful Welcome The Achilles’ triumphant homecoming was acclaimed by large early-morning crowds from all points of vantage around the waterfront; also a large fleet of small craft. There were screams of welcome from every steam vessel in the port and warmly cheering crowds of relatives and official representatives on the central wharf, as the warship, with her decks and upper works lined with the smiling members of the ship’s company, berthed soon after 7 o’clock. It was a grand and glowing welcome. Soon the officers’ wives were allowed aboard, and large numbers of the men were allowed to join their relatives waiting in the large wharf sheds, until it was time for the ship’s company to reassemble to march through the city for the big public reception in front of the Town Hall.
