CHAMPIONS IN FORM
CENTENNIAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES FAST TIMES RECORDED Leading members of Otago’s two successful championship teams were the outstanding competitors at the swimming carnival staged by tlie Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association in the Municipal Baths last night as a part of the Centennial Week attractions, but having regard to the number of champions taking part and the calibre of their performances, the attendance was disappointing. BRILLIANT SWIMMING. Highlights of the meeting were the splendid efforts put up by Colin Sell, the Otago intermediate free style champion, W. H. Dyson, the national men’s 100yds breast stroke champion, and Miss Islay Purdie, the national ladies’ 440yds free style champion, who revealed their very best form. Sell, as a matetr of fact, produced the finest swimming of his career, winning the 220yds interclub free style handicap in the good time of 2min 37 3-ssec. This is the best he has done over the distance, and has not been equalled by an intermediate since the Jarvis brothers were carrying all before them. As Sell is not yet 15 years of age, the merit of his performance is enhanced. In taking second place in his heat of the 110yds intermediate and junior boys’ free style handicap, Sell was officially timed in 60 l-sseo, also his fastest over this distance to date. This was a second faster than his time at the recent New Zealand intermediate and junior championship meeting, and as he had already contested the furlong and 100yds races, the worth of the effort may ‘be gauged. His swimming throughout the season has been consistently good, and l ha is now .displacing brilliant form. Dyson, fresh from record-breaking swimming at Wellington, was timed in 73 4-ssec when he filled second place to R. Peat, the Otago intermediate champion, in the 100yds interclub breast stroke handicap. Peat’s time was 82 - 2-sseo, also a good effort. Dyson," always swimming from the mark of honour, has not been unplaced in a breast stroke handicap in Dunedin this season, and last night’s time was pnly one-fifth of a second slower than the New Zealand senior record he established last week at Wellington. It was the fastest time that has been returned here with the exception of Reg. Geddes’s New Zealand intermediate boys’ mark of 73 3-ssec, established in an unpaced swim in 1933. Miss Purdie, in filling second place to her youthful clubmate, Sell, in the 220yds interclub free style handicap, registered the fastest time that has been put up by an Otago woman competitor in Dunedin, her time of 2min
45 l-osec being the second fastest of her career, and actually four-fifths of a second faster than the winning time at the New Zealand championships last week. Miss Purdie’s own New Zealand record of 2min 40sec was made at Auckland in 1937. Another titleholder to display impressive form was Ngaire Lane, the New Zealand junior girls’ free style champion, who won a heat of the 50yds junior free style handicap in the fast time of 32 4-ssec and also swam into a place in her heat of the 100yds intermediate and junior event. Among the younger swimmers particularly, there were several disqualifications, due largely to most of the competitors improving on their declared times by more than the 5 per cept. margin allowed under Die rules. This improvement, while it may bring disqualification in its train, at least indicates the rapid advance being made by a number of the young competitors who have been assisted also by the condition of the water, which has never been in a better state than at present. The rule in regard to time was not applied to competitors in the under-12 section.
STEWART’S SPECTACULAR DIVING.
One of the finest displays of diving given here in recent years was that of Jack Stewart, the New Zealand intermediate boys’ diving champion, in winning the interclub diving handicap. H is boldness, dash, grace, and command of balance in the air further confirmed the impression that he may yet prove himself to be the logical successor to Roy Calder. Filling second place to Stewart was Rita Smith, the New Zealand intermediate girls’ champion, who also turned on a fine display. MAYOR’S REMARKS. The mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), in opening the carnival, congratulated the Otago Centro on the fine record that had been achieved by its swimmers this year. It had won all the major trophies. It had held the intermediate and junior trophy, the War Memorial Shield, for five years in succession, the Yaldhurst Shield (senior trophy) three times in the last four, and the water polo trophy for four years in succession. Mr Allen referred to the very great benefit young people wore deriving from the sport,- not_ only as competitors but in the physical sense. _ Stressing the importance of encouraging hoys and girls to take part in swimming. Mr Allen said that it would be for them to carrv on in the immediate future, and there was no doubt that the centre was doing a work of national importance for which ho tendered the thanks of the city.
