CENTENNIAL SPORTS
DUNEDIN CELEBRATIONS OPENED BIG GATHERING AT THE “ GALE " The Caledonian Ground was a hive of sporting activity this afternoon, when with one of the most comprehensive and varied sports gathering staged here for a long time, Dunedin’s centennial week celebrations were launched. Overhead conditions were quite pleasant, and, although the tracks were soft after re-, cent rain, good performances were expected since the large representation of track and field competitors included not only many of the province’s best athletes, but several of New Zealand’s outstanding performers. In addition to a long track and field programme, which catered for both men and women athletes, cycling events and wrestling competitions were staged, and national dancing and bagpipe competitions were also included, the total entries for all events being 478 from 271 competitors. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Band and the Kaikorai Brass Band were in attendance, and one of the highlights of the fixture was the colourful parade and march past of the competitors which preceded the athletic programme and which was followed by a short address by the mayor (Mr_ A. H. Allen) appropriate to the occasion. Results:Highland Fling, under 12 years.— Helen J. Dalgety (80 points) 1, Isabel Gray (78) 2, Helen Warnock (761) 3. Beverly Wix (76) v.h.c.
