SIXTH CITY IN SIZE, Wanganui is situated on "the Rhine of New Zealand," four miles from its mouth. Wanganui, with a population of 26,000, became a city in 1924. First peopled in 1840, this settlement, then called Petre, was the scene of the outbreak of the rebellion (in 1848).
